FOR THOSE OF YOU THAT SAW THIS POST ORIGINALLY, I HAVE NOW ADDED A LIST OF SCHOOLS I AM LOOKING INTO, AND I WOULD LOVE FEEDBACK

California Resident
I go to a state school
BS in Exercise Physiology

GPA started off my first three or four semesters with a 2.9ish. After realizing I want to go into medicine, the subsequent 8 semesters my cGPA is a 3.95 and sGPA is a 4.0

I work both part-time and full time for a medical foundation for 4.5 years doing front desk administrative work, and clinical work, rooming patients and such. (gotta be pushing 2500+ hours)

I interned as an exercise physiologist two times a week for 4 hours each time for about 8 months

Tutored O-chem for one year at my university

Volunteering about 3 hours a week for 5-6 months now at a free medical clinic rooming patients, taking vitals, educating the patient, taking chief complaints, etc.

Volunteering for the monthly campus blood drives at my Uni for the last year and a half

I have about 80 hours of shadowing general surgeons and family medicine doctors

Campus community involvement officer for the Pre-Med club for one year, and the following year Treasurer and public relations officer (at the same time).

2 Years of division one Rugby

Semester of research analyzing the differences in biomechanical techniques for the lifter during non-ambulatory seated patient transfer with the hopes to reduce lower back injury of lifters in patient transfer.

My MCAT spread was PS 12 BS 11 V 8

I have the FAP. So I believe I have 14 free applications.

Your clinical volunteering is pretty weak other than that your stats are decent. California is rough as you know there's no guarantee. You seem to have leadership, tutoring, some research but humanitarian community service is missing? I think if you can squeeze more hours of non-clinical and clinical volunteering you have a decent chance at a MD school. Make sure you write an excellent personal statement and secondaries since your writing score isn't good. Apply to a lot of mid-tier and safety schools especially on the East Coast to be safe.

I know my verbal is low, but there is no way in hell I am retaking the MCAT.

I'd LOVE to stay in cali. But I understand how competitive my state is. I have nothing against DO, except for the fact that I limit my opportunities in possible residencies.

I'd like to know how I'll fair in MD programs within the US

It will not be easy. You may not get in your first year. You need to apply broadly, and get use to the idea you may be leaving CA for medical school. You need to keep focusing on the hospital volunteer experiences and shadowing. I would also make sure to stress the Rugby in your secondary applications. I would say you will get into DO school without a problem, but I would highly suggest finding a DO to shadow for a LOR.

I have a LOR from a DO who is my "mentor" and I have worked under for 4.5 years.

Does that work?

The reply from you and the poster prior both mention how hard cali schools are and how I should think about going out of state.

I want to make it clear that I have absolutely NO qualms with going out of state. I just want to get into an MD program SOMEWHERE in the US.

By being open to any MD program in the US (not just cali schools), are my chances appreciable?

I would think so. Your GPA is high, your MCAT isn't too bad. People on here are going to be downers about your chances but apply to some lower tier med schools outside Cali.

upward trending GPA and a pretty good MCAT, I think you've got a great shot at some low to mid tier OOS MD programs (but def still stick your application in for all the CA schools that interest you). Try searching other threads on SDN or picking up an MSAR book from AAMC that will outline OOS schools with a relatively high acceptance rate for OOS and GPA/MCAT within your ranges. You could easily put together a list of 20-30 schools that are definitely within reach for you. Write a strong PS, apply early, and be passionate during the interview/post-interview process and I think you've got a great shot. There have been plenty of people (and CA residents) with worse stats than yours that have been accepted, don't get discouraged.

EDIT: woops someone above mentioned the OOS thing already

I don't mean to discourage you, but have you looked into how OOS friendly some of those public schools are? just seems like there are a lot on there, i applied this cycle with similar stats as you and got rejected from all OOS publics, typically there are only 30-40 spots (if that) reserved for out of state, so those applicants are judged on a much higher level, which isnt necessarily reflected in the school's "averages" given on their websites

My only big justification for even trying for all of those sub 8 VR schools was specifically just that...They were sub-8 VR. That coupled with the fact that they do technically accept a few OOS, I was being desperate (my 8VR has made me nervous).

In case I missed any: does anyone know of any schools I didnt list that accept white OOS and their 10th percentile VR is 7?

For WV, they say state, "There are available spaces for well-qualified non-residents, especially with strong WV ties." I thought I fulfilled the first one, and the second would be a feather in the cap.

Indiana - I am starting to see that all of these schools that mention OOS with strong ties really down play it so that it sounds like they definitely love OOS with strong ties, but they wont hate you if you have no ties at all.

Wake - I'm really intimidated by their median MCAT (34) and their high number of OOS applications

LSU-NO - 4 Accepted OOS applicants last year...Any particular reason you suggested this school?

NYMC - I guess I am just intimidated by their high number of OOS applicants

Vermont - Added to my list

Oakland - Are they adding class seats? Only 15 accepted OOS applicants

Louisville - Added to my list

Buffalo State - Added to my list

Wish full thinking made me ignore the bold and look directly at the raw data, without taking into account what you said.

Might I ask if you got any acceptances?

I got 3 waitlist positions, however don't get too discouraged, I applied really late because I took the MCAT so late, Ive spoken with some of the schools I got rejected from and was told that a lot of the reason was the late application, moral of the story: we average applicants HAVE to apply early.

Also I read a book by a former adcom at Mt. Sinai (The Mededits Guide to Medical School) where she said that the Verbal is the least important of the three sections, not to downplay it's testing of your critical thinking skills, but it said that as long as you show aptitude for Bio/physical it can sometimes balance out a low Verbal. Just wanted to let you know that!

I read that they plan to matriculate up to 40 OOSers in 2012 which makes for 22% of the class.

Just got off the phone withLSU admissions. This is TRUE. Additionally, the gal told me no preference to any specific out of staters.

Thank you so much for the heads up.

The only thing to hold me back is my PS, which I plan to have doneby the end of May.

Thank you so much for the info

Getting information like this ahead of the pack improves one's chances. And since you're from a warm place, I thought you might like it. 🙂
