Hello SDN,
This is my first post. I've looked at your site before, and I've found the information to be very useful. Thanks in advance for your time.
I'm a UG junior, and I'm starting to narrow down on applying to med-school. I'm from the NY area, and would preferably like to attend a school around NYC (Colombia and NYU are my reach schools; Downstate and NYMC are more realistic choices).
I have yet to take the MCAT, but I plan on taking it early this summer.
Here are my qualifications
-Physics BA
-cumulative GPA: 3.76 (upward trend)
-science GPA: 3.63 (if you count Calc-2, Calc-3, and Diff-Eq as science classes)
-----My lowest grades are a B in both cell-bio and gen-chem 2. No failures, and nothing under a B
-NO MCAT yet
EC's:
-Resident Assistant (RA) as of this semester, will be RA for 3 semesters by graduation
-Writing tutor for 2 semesters
-Summer Hospital Volunteering experience (roughly 40 hours)
-Retail experience for 4 years.
-Published in my university's book of first-year writing as a model essay for first-year students.
My major concern is that I am lacking some clinical experience. My pre-med adviser told me that it would be OK if I didn't do any research. I'm not sure if I'll be able to throw that in by the time I graduate. I plan on looking for an internship/shadowing experience for this upcoming summer.
How do you think I stack up? What do you think I need to pull on the MCAT? What types of schools should I be applying to? I would love to end up in NYC, but I'm very open to applying anywhere.
Please be honest, and thank you for taking time to read my post. I'm very nervous about the whole applying process. There's so much I don't know about it, and I just want to start getting an idea of which direction to go in.
Thank you!
