Hey everyone! I'm starting my junior year and I'm just wondering how my stats are looking so far. I'm going to be applying this summer, so if anyone has any advice on how I can boost my application I would really appreciate it. I don't really have a school list yet so if someone can list a couple that are in my range I would appreciate it. I will be getting the MSAR and creating an actual school list of around 30 before applying though.

EC's/Hobbies:
- Science Club (3 years so far, planning to continue until graduation)- I held positions as treasure my sophomore year and Co-president this year. Most of the club activities center around hosting science fairs at elementary schools. We started up a science program with a local elementary school that has mostly under served students so that they can participate in the county science fairs. We fund all their experiments ourselves. We also have a tutoring program that I started. We have 5 tutors and we tutor around 35 students a week across multiple years and science/ math classes.
- Minorities in science club (3 years so far, planning to continue)- just a member. Went to all meetings and events. I've had lots of great experiences in this group and it connected me to other minority students, so even though it seems like a small EC I would still like to put it on my application.
- Lab Assistant ( work study, 1 school year)- I worked in a lab for my Sophomore year. It was paid and I mostly did the grunt work. prepping plates and bacteria mostly. I'm not sure if this counts as research experience or not.
- Minority Research Program( 10 weeks, summer 2013)- This was a summer program I applied to and got in. It was 10 weeks of learning lab techniques across 10 different labs on campus. There was a stipend for the summer, and at the end it placed me on a research lab on campus.
- Researcher - After the program I was placed into a lab on campus. I'm still receiving a monthly stipend and have reduced tuition. I'm planning on continuing until graduation, so at the time of applying I'll have a year of experience. A publication by graduation seems possible ( this labs publishes several papers a year).
- Hospital A Volunteer( 2.5 years, 314 hours)- I volunteered at a small local community hospital for 2.5 years. started my junior year of high school and had to stop my sophomore year of college. I had TONS of patient interaction. I volunteered in the pre and post operation areas. Watched lots of surgeries, but I'm not sure if I count this as shadowing.
Hospital B volunteer- (1 year so far, planning to continue until graduation)- After a year of not volunteering I decided to continue, but I had to choose a different hospital. In this one I volunteer in the emergency room. I have ~150 hours so far. I get lots of patient interaction.
- SCUBA- I started taking SCUBA classes my Sophomore year. I took the beginner, advanced, and scientific diving SCUBA classes. I consider this more of a hobby, but I do plan on continue diving for as long as possible.
- Guitarist( 5 years)- I've been playing since high school. I learned using the internet and going to very few classes. So I'm not classically trained or anything like that. I practice everyday and I'll continue through medical school because it is a great stress reducer for me.
- Surfing ( half a year)- I recently learned how to surf and now I got to the beaches pretty often.
- Fitness- I've been a runner since high school. Starting freshman year I stopped focusing on running and began to focus on fitness in general. I go to the gym 6 days a week. I still love running so I have participated in lots of 5 and 10Ks, 3 half marathons, and 1 (2 by the time I apply) marathons.
- Grab Bag volunteering stuff- This is a lot of random volunteering stuff. Everything from abused womens shelter to race event volunteering. It totals to around 100 hours. I can list all the stuff if asked. It is mostly non-medical/ hobby related stuff.
- CPR certified. Not really important
I think this is pretty much it. I may be missing some small stuff, but I have listed the most important things. If anyone has any advice to how I can improve my application by the summer please let me know. I have a really light course load, so I have plenty of time to add an EC to further balance my application. Thank you so much for reading, I know its a lot 😛
