Hey everyone,

So I am retaking my MCAT on August 14th. I submitted my primary application today. My last MCAT was a 27S so I am hoping for anything about a 30 this time. My question is, with the late application (I figure my results come back on Sep 15 and I will submit my secondaries on that day as well), what are my chances of getting in to the schools I have applied to (take a look at MD apps)? Lets say worst case scenario even with a 29 on the MCAT. Let me know when you get the chance. Particularly, I am looking at SUNY downstate. Thanks.

Just a few pointers, make sure you check with your schools regarding whether they are accepting such a late MCAT. I know several schools say that they will not accept a June MCAT for this ongoing application cycle.

On another note, I know that if you tell your schools that you will be taking your mcat, they will most likely put you on a MCAT hold. I know when I called EVMS, who had asked me to take my MCAT again, told me that they will continue to review my application but will technically be on hold until they recieve my new MCAT score. I hope this helps.

Honestly just by looking at your schools it looks like you have an uphill battle. With an mcat of around 30(like predicted) you have a chance at some of the SUNY's and NYMC and Temple, but most of your other schools are high tier schools which ideally an MCAT score of 34+ may give you a shot.

Your EC's look good as you have quite a bit of clinical experience and some other good EC's. If your research with your mentor can bring in a poster or presentation that may be something good for an update letter after submitting your secondary. Do you have any Shadowing?

Ok, wow talk about having a heart attack. I looked at all of the schools and they all accept MCAT dates up till September.

Yeah, I have shadowing in all of my volunteer experiences. I shadowed with doctors in the ER of Bellevue Hospital and NY Presbyterian-Columbia. Also, the Bellevue Program that I am a part of is ultra competitive and I was hoping that could help me in applying to NYU. In the program, we shadow, perform EKGS, do clinical research and transport patients. Im hoping that could make me stand out.

Oh, yeah. I forgot to mention that I have recommendations from both the NY Presbyterian Columbia volunteer coordinator and the Bellevue Hospital (affiliated with NYU) coordinator. Maybe those would help me out?

Honestly I'm not sure if the recommendations will help or not. Hopefully one of the "What are my chances" braniacs will come in soon to give you much better advice then I could ever dream of! 🙂

If you can somehow pull out a 33-35 I think you will be much more competitive at some of the schools on your list. Your 3.8 GPA is pretty solid. Here is my take:

MCAT = 30-34
Albert Einstein
NYMC
All SUNY's
Temple
Tufts
Rochester

MCAT = 34+
Boston
Columbia
Cornell
Mt. Sinai
Penn
Pitt

I don't see any shadowing in your MDApps. Your research is below average.

Everything else is awesome 👍 of course, save the MCAT

However, the lack in shadowing (if true) and research will make it nearly impossible to get into Einstein, BU, Columbia, Cornell, Sinai, NYU, Tufts, UPenn, and UPitt. This is assuming a 30 MCAT.

That's like your whole list.

If you can get up to 32-34 on the MCAT, you can add Einstein, Tufts, and Sinai. Everything else will require a 35 (remember, I'm assuming you have no shadowing and low research).

Anyway, you said you are most interested in SUNY Downstate. I think with a 30, you have an excellent shot at SUNY Downstate. All you have to do (besides getting that 30, or even 29 may cut it (but no 8s in any section)) is get involved in clinical shadowing asap, so you can talk about it at a potential interview.

I haven't put clinical shadowing on my md apps, but I have a lot of it. During my two years (3 by the time I hopefully get to interviews) at Bellevue Hospital I have shadowed ER doctors and have even shadowed doctors in the Operating Room. On my primary application, I have included shadowing in all of my hospital volunteering experiences. So I do have shadowing on my record.

And as for my research, I didn't put it in the MD apps but its part of my senior thesis that I will have been working on for 1.5 years total that involves finding a behavioral assay for autism. I will have a publication out by the end of next year so maybe I would be able to add that like as supplemental information (you know, being extremely hopeful that I get an interview and possibly a waitlist).

But yeah, if I could get into Downstate that would make me a happy clam, so hopefully it would work. Thanks for the input. My dream is NYU though so we will see.

Great stuff! If possible, you realllllly want to push that publication through, however possible, small journal, small article, whatever. It will help you have some shot (however distant it may be) at NYU.

You are well positioned for Downstate - just continue as you are!

Hey,

I'm kind of in the same boat. I am getting ready to take the MCATs and am a bit nervous about my score. I'm expecting it to range from a 29-32 (most likely with a lower verbal score). I do have a good GPA though, 3.9. Additionally, I've done some interning/shadowing at a local hospital, volunteered a lot, and am a captain of a division one soccer team (which I heard helps). What are my chances of at least getting interviews at places like George Washington, Thomas Jefferson, Penn State... and then other schools like Pitt, Cornell, NYU?

Thanks for any help!

This is a repeat post - please delete - just leave behind a period.

So I got my MCAT score back and I got a 33Q!!! With an 11-11-11 breakdown. I was wondering if you guys could re-evaluate my chances. I already sent in the secondaries to all schools except Columbia, Stony, and Pittsburg (still deciding if I even want to apply). Let me know. Thanks 🙂
