Thanks in advance!

You should receive several DO interviews. Your MCAT is low for all the Texas MD schools but you may receive 1 or 2 interviews due to your good GPA.

Thank you! And I forgot to mention, this is my second MCAT score. My first score fell between the range of 495-499. Will this make a difference in my application?

I hate to do this, but I have to respectfully disagree with Faha regarding possibly getting 1 to 2 TX MD interviews with two non-competitive MCAT scores and a 122 in CARS in the 2nd MCAT. Since OP is ORM, they would need be military or with something in the EC that truly stands out. Also OP, consider retaking the MCAT and scoring 510+ if TX MDs are what you are shooting for.

I hope that I am wrong on this...

Here is the latest stats from TMDSAS:

That is a great source you have there. 108 matriculants out of 793 applicants with MCAT scores in the 497 to 501 range. Some may be URM but some are also applicants with high GPA's such as the 3.8 cGPA and 3.65sGPA that OP has. 1 or 2 interviews are possible but of course an actual acceptance is more difficult.

Thank you guys for the responses. And yeah I’m really shooting for DO at this point, I feel like my chances are best there.

And @Faha you’re basically saying that based on the chart, those who most likely matriculated to an MD program with my MCAT were in that 3.76cGPA-4.0cGPA range?

I agree with DV-T.

I think you will be very hard-pressed to receive any Texas interviews, and that does include TCOM. I say this for a couple reasons:

1) Yes. Your GPA is great. But the average GPA across *half* of the Texas schools is higher than your GPA. So I think the prospect that you get an interview because of a ‘high GPA’ is not a good one.
2) I’m not sure what “a little” research means, but most Texas schools - including TCOM - *really* like research, and not having a solid amount certainly won’t do you any favors here.
3) The obvious issue of your MCAT, which I won’t bother explaining, which is solidly below the average of every Texas school including UTRGV (504ish) and TCOM (507ish).

Regardless, I *do* recommend that you apply to all TMDSAS and see what happens. It’s not a particularly expensive application and most of the secondaries are lightweight(ish). But I think your expectation needs to be squarely in AACOMAS.

But you could u say that people with op's stats have a chance at getting in, based on the chart above? i realize they are slim, but I mean, the table shows it and you do hear of people like that around. my mcat is slightly above op's but also debating a retake or not

You need to account for URM, socioeconmically challenged, people with a hell of a story, and extra curriculars that are far and beyond the average applicant.

The number of people that got in with what OP posted is nonzero, but it’s...not significant.

Of those 13% accepted I assume that most were URM or those with a GPA in the 3.76 to 4.0 range.

Thank you for the advice again Faha, really feels great getting insight from an actual physician. 🙂 Hopefully the Texas schools show me love!

Hey bro, I’ve been hearing the same stories as well. Just gotta work harder on other parts of our application and find ways to stick out. Best of luck to you

TCOM is your best bet for this cycle. I would retake the MCAT since you have the ECs and an acceptable GPA. You should use the MCAT outline as a guide, cover each topic on it, and take as many practice tests as possible. Do not sit for the exam unless you are seeing a huge improvement. I have a friend who went from a 502 (third attempt) to a 510 after doing this for a few months and are doing fine in an MD program. It can be done.

CARS is a struggle for a lot of people, my verbal was always mediocre. Jack Westein's program helped me get an acceptable score in the section, but it is expensive.

IMO, you probably won't get any love from Tx MD programs given you numbers and ORM status. Maybe if you were military.

GL.
