Howdy. Hoping to apply next cycle (e.g., enter med school the 2014-2015 academic year). Currently a Junior in college.

cGPA: 3.9
sGPA: 3.9

Clinical volunteering: About 20 hours of volunteer work at a local indigent care clinic, ongoing.

Physician shadowing: Low; only about 6 hours of shadowing a doctor in the ER. Will have more opportunities this year.

Research: None, but planning to do a senior thesis.

ECs: A lot of time volunteering with various organizations at and around my school. Active in many service/academic clubs. Helped run a service organization my sophomore year, currently helping to run a more involved service organization this year. Student government senator. Varsity member of a sports team at my school.

Employment: Did 2 summer internships in software development. One loosely medically related, one not, but both gave me a lot of "real-world" experience (i.e., outside the academic bubble).

I'm a Computer Science major. Related to that: I'm worried I'll have the MCAT done "late." I won't have my pre-reqs done until the end of this year (Junior year). My school year finishes in May, so I won't have a lot of study time. Will taking the MCAT in July (meaning my scores get released in August) hurt me? I'm not very excited to take a "gap year" and would like to matriculate into med school right after I graduate from college.

Have a general idea of where I'd fit in/where I should apply? On the spectrum from "actually, you should look at DO" to my state schools to Harvard/Duke/Mayo? Advice especially appreciated on my MCAT situation.

I understand that I've been pretty vague. Please ask for more details if it would help you and I will try to provide them as anonymously as I can.

Thanks for your time!

I don't think having to wait until August for your MCAT scores will be terribly detrimental to your application. Make sure, though, that you apply early; the sooner you complete your application (June, July, and August are generally the best) the better your chances, so as long as you do well on the MCAT you should be fine.

It will not hurt you at all, just make sure you get your primary and secondaries in as early as possible. WIthout a solid MCAT score, no one will be able to tell you where you can apply. Your GPA is superb and will not preclude you from any schools, top-tier or otherwise.

For you i'd imagine that
> 35 MCAT = Top-Tiers
> 32 MCAT = Mid-Tiers
> 29 MCAT = "Low"-Tiers
