Terrific GPA. Your activities list is good. Of course your first-author pub "counts". Even published poetry counts if its not in a school publications.

I'd check the MSAR for bottom 10th percentile on verbal and prune out those above an 8, like Einstein.

Any thoughts on retaking the MCAT to raise your VS? Regardless, I think your chances in Texas are good.

If you apply now you'll get into noncompetitive schools for sure.

If you retake the MCAT, get 35+, you'll get into just about anywhere.

What about if I get a 30-31 with at least a 9 in verbal?

That's good to hear.

Is it okay that I don't really have any leadership positions?

If you want to stay in Texas you have NOTHING to worry about if you interview well. Southwestern and Baylor are reach due solely to your MCAT. I had zero luck with AMCAS schools but my MCAT was a lot lower than yours.

Wow you did really well I see... but that's probably because you have really unique ECs. Mine aren't are just average

You crushed me in research hours and the mission trips are pretty unique as well. You also are covered in volunteering hours. The only 'weakness' is possibly leadership which tutoring can count under. Your GPA is insane and your MCAT is nothing to be ashamed about. It isn't the 'magic 30+' but it will do. Really I predict multiple interviews, but take the secondaries at Tech and A&M seriously. I know nothing about Houston and if they will have a secondary. Realistically, southwestern and baylor are stretches, if you have your heart set on a top 20 then that is the only reason to retake the MCAT. I wish I had an 8 in verbal when I got my 6, I took a gamble and it paid off. You aren't taking a gamble with an 8. I look forward to seeing all of your success on SDN this next application cycle!

The MSAR is a good source if you haven't heard about it. Personally, I think the information about the schools is good. You can find it on most of the websites as well if you don't want to pay for the MSAR. Also, it is just a guide and by no means is the end all be all of getting into medical school.

if anything, the 29 MCAT is your only weakness. otherwise i think u look good!
