A solution is 90 percent glycerin. If there are 4 gallons of the solution, how much water, in gallons, must be added to make a 75-percent glycerin solution?

Here are the answers:
(a) 1.4
(b) 1.2
(c) 1.0
(d) 0.8

Please explain your answers.

A magazine's survey of its subscribers finds that 20 percent are male. If 70 percent of the subscribers are married, and 10 percent of these are male, what percent of the male subscribers are not married?

Here are the answers:
(a) 7%
(b) 13%
(c) 35%
(d) 65%

Please explain your answers.

A 25-ounce solution is 20 percent alcohol. If 50 ounces of water are added to it, what percent of the new solution is alcohol?

(a) 5%
(b) 6 2/3 %
(c) 8%
(d) 12 1/3%

I know the answers to these 3 problems but would like an explanation (as there is no explanation in the text book).

you know the answers, but you still want explanation? If you know how to derive the answer, then you can explain it.
 
They are algebra problems. What exactly do you need explained?

1) Initial Volume * Initial Concentration = Final Volume * Final Concentration
...then figure out how much was added

2) make the total number of subscribers 100, since you are dealing with percent...giving you 20 males...figure out the rest

3) similar to #1
 
OP, this is seventh grade stuff...

1.) 0.8 oz
2.) 13% of total are single men, 65% of men are single
3.) 6.66%

Dear Michael,
Every year I attempt to boost my students' final grades by giving them this relatively simple exam consisting of 100 True/False questions from only 3 chapters of material. For the past 20 years that I have taught Intro Communications 101 at this institution I have never once seen someone score below a 65 on this exam. Consequently, your score of a zero is the first in history and ultimately brought the entire class average down a whole 8 points.
There were two possible answer choices: A (True) and B (False). You chose C for all 100 questions in an obvious attempt to get lucky with a least a quarter of the answers. It's as if you didn't look at a single question. Unfortunately, this brings your final grade in this class to failing. See you next year!

Erm, someone correct me if I'm wrong, but this forum is not for homework help.

Try posting on Yahoo Answers! under Math or Chemistry and I guarantee you'll get some sucker to do it for you. (Actually, I play that game a lot, but I like answering the Biology questions more. 😛)

Okay, I'll bite since no body provided the OP how to do these problems.

1) Simple dilution problem. Use M1V1 = M2V2.

(.9)(4) = (.75)V2
V2 = 4.8
4.8 - 4 = 0.8 gallons or answer D

2) You know 20% are male. 70% are married and of the married subscribers, 10% are male. You want to know how many unmarried males subscribe.

So, 10% of 70% = % of males that are married, which is 7%. Substract 7% from 20% (total male subscribers) and you are left with 13% or answer B

3) Simple dilution problem. Use M1V1 = M2V2
(25)(.2) = M2(75); you get 75 by adding 50 to 25 so that is the new volume.

M2 = 6 2/3% or answer B.

i'm not sure if that's how you do number 3...

the way i did it is i first found out how much alcohol was in the initial solution: 20% or 0.2 x 25 = 5 ounces alcohol.

when you add 50 oz of water the volume of water will increase but the volume of alcohol will not. thus 5/75 = 0.066666666667 or 6 and 2/3.

He has the answers from the book. He does not know how to derive the answers from the problem, therefore he wants someone to explain how to get the solution. Instead, dickheads are giving him **** about it. Lame...thats all I'm getting at.

It sounds to me like he knows the answers, not that he looked them up in the back of the book. I guess you and I define what it is to "know" something differently, which is fine.

I do not think calling anyone a "dickhead" or a "douche" is it ALL warranted. It's clear that OP is trying to solicit solutions to easy mathematics problems (AND I SUCK AT MATH) instead of going to the proper outlets, such as tutor/mentor services, friends/classmates, professor office hours, and websites devoted to helping people with their homework.

You right, name calling is kinda juvenile. I just don't see a problem with posting a thread asking a math question. Fenderbiz gave a perfectly good explanation without doing the work/calculations for him. People assume he's soliciting answers, I just assume he's trying to find knowledgeable people to help him out. We do define things differently. At the same time I'm not stupid enough to think if everyone started posting random questions about things this forum wouldn't become chaotic, but thats the nature of the beast.

I'm with 4Sci. If you look at this guy's posting history, here are some of his posts:

What gets absorbed, secreted, reaborbed at the distal and proximal convoluted tubules?

And most notably, the guy's name is "gotquestions." By all means, people should feel free to ask questions, but this fellow seems pretty stale and dry with his question types.

With all due respect to the original poster, if I were a TA, my BS meter would be going off. His most recent post sounds like a situation where he probably copied it from a friend (or maybe just from the back of the textbook) but then realized that he had a quiz or a test coming up. As a hypothetical TA, of course I can understand situations where a the lecture or textbook simply isn't making sense to a student. My only request to visitors would be for them to tell me what they know and have deduced so far. In this case, the original poster could have at least summarized what he knows, how he views the problem, or what his conjectures are. The advantage of knowing what a student is thinking makes it much easier to custom-tailor an explanation to the student's thought process.

As for this original post, its succinct and somewhat-suspect nature does a disservice to both him and the people who choose to help him.

OK, I stand corrected. He asked the "Why Pharmacy?," question. That question irritates me. Feel free to give OP as much **** as you want...lol. I still do see way too many condescending answers to post that people want serious help with, and that always gets me fired up. In this case I was wrong.....somewhat wrong.
