3 Weeks 10 interviews---Is it humanly possible??

So it looks like the only time I am going to have to interview next year is going to be from December 19th to January 9th. For those of you who have already applied or are interviewing now, are there really a lot of interview slots open during this time. I figure that most admissions offices will be closed on Christmas Eve and Christmas day along with New Year's eve and day (which luckily are all on the weekends!!!!!) Booyay!

I won't be able to come to the US AT ALL starting early September until these three weekends and then not until August when I would theoretically have to matriculate.

So looking at the calendar for 2011/2012 how many interviews do you think I could theoretically fit in. Thanks🙂

10 interviews in 3 weeks sounds possible, it just depends what the geographical order is. Exhausting, but possible.

Obviously, it wouldn't really work very well if the order was something like east coast, east coast, west coast, east coast, west coast, east coast...

Focus on landing 1 interview before you start worrying about how to schedule 10

Seriously who gets 10 interviews? And the chances of you landing an interview that can be accommodated on those exact dates is pretty low I think. Most schools send out interviews and want the students to schedule them as soon as possible. For rolling admission, it will put you at a distinct disadvantage. And the schools may look at scheduling an interview so late as you not taking the interview process as seriously or as a priority. With 10,000 applicants, they can just as easily chose someone else. I would try to open up your schedule and realize that you may have to try to find some time to come in October/November and try to have them accommodate within those months and your Dec/Jan dates.

I know one girl who had ten MD interviews by the end of August. I'm currently at 11.

OP, I would call a few schools you are interested in and see what their policy would be for students out of the country and interviewing. They might wait to schedule you in Dec/Jan, or they might not. It would be difficult but possible.

I was looking on one med school's website a while ago. I happened upon their calendar and saw that they weren't just taking a few days off for the holidays. They were taking a 3 week break. Also, for most of my interview offers, I've been given a choice of about 6 dates about 4-6 weeks from when I get the invite to do the interview. Also, you said you won't be able to come to the US until "these three weekends." Interviews are during the work week, not the weekend. I don't think there is any chance your plan will work.

Just because its not good to assume your going to get 10 interviews, doesn't mean that its unreasonable to expect to get at least one or two.

If a person can't look at his application and say "X and Y school will most likely interview me" then he should probably be strengthening his application instead of sitting around hoping for interviews.

It is okay. He's under a little stress. I've been there. Years ago I almost transferred schools because I was afraid of getting a B. Though I'm too lazy to check, I think he's the same guy who complained about his girlfriend dumping him and not taking the MCAT yet (or was it not applying to some EDP program). I think the title of the thread was something overblown like "FML my life sucks" or "FML i'm a failure"

Just because Christmas Eve/Christmas Day and New Years Eve/New Years Day fall on weekends doesn't mean that the offices won't be closed for the holidays. Those holidays will be observed on Monday and in some cases workers will have off the previous Friday and/or the following Tuesday as well. With two federal holidays almost back to back, many offices just shut down for the week between Christmas & New Year. Furthermore, because some schools depend on M1 and M2 students to serve as student hosts and tour guides, some schools do not schedule interviews during the "winter break" that generally includes the last week of December (sometimes the last 2 weeks of December).

If I were guessing, I'd say no interviews after December 21, 2011 or before Jan 3, 2012. So if you managed to pack 3 in December and 4 in January you'd be doing well. That would mean interviewing during the day, traveling immediately after the interview and being where ever you need to be the next morning. Businessmen do it all the time.

Over aggressive and hesitant to post any stats... man, I think you'll have a hard time limiting it to 10 interviews! Apply to no more than 9 schools just to be sure.

One more thing to think of... several schools have not given me a whole lot of choice when to interview. It goes something like this: "This is your interview day. Confirm or reschedule." If you reschedule they will again asign you a later date and not ask you if that date is ok. They will simply assign it. So it becomes tricky to put them all together. It would be nice if it worked that way, but in all reality it just doesn't.

most school are closed for the holiday break...so no interviews the week of christmas nor the week of new year so so in reality you only have at most the week of the second to interview depending on when schools go back in session.

it's possible, dont do it though. There is no reason to interview at some of these schools if you honestly couldn't even see yourself there. Best of luck! Clearly you will get in and you should give some interview spots to those who really need them, especially at the schools you can't see yourself at...

Obviously the vast majority don't, but if you have good stats, nice LORs, well-written PS, good ECs and apply to a lot of schools (20+) it's not so unlikely. Also to maximize yield, obviously one should apply to schools that have missions/objectives that fit the applicant's goals and ECs.

My school doesn't interview at all during those dates. All the students are gone! This means no student interviewers, hosts or tour guides. You also rarely can pick the dates you interview. My school just sends out a date, I think. If you can't make it you can reschedule, but there are limitations.

Yea most schools let you pick a date by emailing, calling or using an interactive menu, but they often only let you pick within a limited range (generally close to 1st available day). At one school I called to reschedule an interview a few weeks I was hinted to that doing so would not be the best move. Don't make the schools try to play these guessing games with your intentions (unless you have a good reason as to why you can't interview at a certain time, like strict job requirements or being out of the country).

I'm doing 7 interviews in 2 weeks, and I honestly think it'll be so much better that way because I can focus on JUST interviewing and nothing else and get into a groove. So 10 in 3 should be fine, I think. Just schedule them so that you move in one direction locationally.

What I really meant to say is who expects or plans to have 10 interviews. I know some people get 10+ interviews, I had 7 myself. But it has to be the top few percentile, no?

On the OP's end, probably the biggest logistical issue will be clothing. I did 3 interviews in a week, and I was surprised by how difficult it was to keep everything clean and well pressed. Granted, my interviews were in Sept. when temperatures were still warm enough to make it somewhat uncomfortable to walk across a campus in the noon sun.

Dry cleaning will take at least 24 hours (usually more like a few days unless you pay for rush service), so at a minimum you might want to bring several shirts. Two separate outfits to rotate would be even better. All that packing and repacking and wearing will mean you should always have access to an iron too.

I got 10 interviews spread over the course of 3 months so far, and even if they were scheduled perfectly which they wont, I could hardly see myself going to all of them. Ive had 3 interviews in 5 days, and that was intense. Thats the kind of pace you would have to keep up for 3 weeks. Take out a week because of the holidays, and it really just becomes impossible, especially if you will be doing quite a bit of flying...one because of weather delays, and two because its a very busy flying time.

And of course, you are only assuming youre going to get these interviews....dont count your eggs until they hatch. I do hate cliches, but i felt it was necessary.

A lot of schools actually suspend interviews during that time. I know my school does. I think it's unlikely that among your 10 assumed interviews, the schools will all have dates available that line up nicely for you to interview at each one. A lot of times they will assign you a spot with very little flexibility. Or if you're not as competitive as you think you are and you get a late invite, the only available dates left over could be well after jan 9th. I think if you are planning to be overseas, plan on making some transatlantic/pacific flights.
