Are three year programs viewed as less prestigous or inferior to four year programs?

Reason I ask is because I found an older thread which completely bashed three year programs, claiming that you are doomed to retail, and was full of posts by banned members. I'm hoping to get a much better perspective by starting a new thread.

There are several students from 3 year schools that do residencies and fellowships and go on to clinical positions. You can do what you want to in pharmacy if you have the drive to do it. Personally, I plan on NEVER doing retail and yet I am at a 3 year "new" school. If you have the FULL PACKAGE and not just the book smarts, you can do pretty much anything. There's my motivation for the evening.

AAAaaaaagggh! This makes me crazy!!!!

You are all trained to be clinical - no matter your practice setting!!!!!

I'm a very old (well...not that old..😉 ) pharmacist who was one who was one of those who closely followed the classes who pioneered the concept of clinical pharmacy. It was never meant to be limited to the insitutional setting. That was just the easiest place to start.

Your skills and knowledge & abilities are needed as much if not more in the retail setting as in the institutional setting. I absolutely know this for a fact since I've worked them both!

Tomorrow....I'm off to do an influenza immunization clinic - I expect to field many, many questions about medications & their management, side effects, etc along the way.....

The bottom line is - expect to be clinical no matter where you practice! Gatorgirl has it right - you have a choice in what to do with what you are given.

Now...it is your choice if you want to be or not. Same as any job - you can be just ok or you can be great - your choice!!!!!

Thank you! I know my school isn't top ranked or whatever but I plan on being the best darn pharmacist that I can be. Retail needs GOOD pharmacists too but if you want to be "clinical" then do it. Nothing is stopping you but yourself.

👍 Also...you keep learning all your life - you may start out good, but end up great - its all up to you!
