Are there currently any residency programs, aside from family medicine, that are 3 years in total(including built in osteopathic internship year)?

Internal Medicine.

Pediatrics.

Thanks for the quick response DOtobe. Do all osteopathic internal medicine residency programs (that are 3 years) also include the osteopathic internship year? Do you know off hand if there are any ER programs that are still only 3 years?

any linked, fast track, or emphasis internship in internal medicine will be a 3 year total program

there aren't any DO EM programs that are 3 years. about 75-80% of MD EM residencies are 3 years.

hmmm sounds like another reason to do allo em over osteo. Here's another, you can check whole regions of the country on the aoa website and there will be 0 em residencies.

Doesn't much matter about the internship anymore. I heard they were doing away with it as of class of 08. I may be totally wrong but that is the info we got at NSU.

From what i understand, allopathic ER programs are trending toward going 4 years..... There are not a lot of 3 year residencies, but there are quite a few 4 year programs... Ophthalmology, Anesthesia, psychiatry, Neurology, Dermatology, PM&R, etc. If time is an issue, I would look into these fields...

What they did at the AOA meeting was removed the blanket requirement of the DO internship. This leaves it up to each specialty college to decide if they'll still require the internship training.

Does this change have any bearing on the "5 STATES" that require an internship?

DrMom,

Thanks for all of your help. Do these allopathic 3 year ER residency programs have a built in so called "allopathic internship year"? I know that the AOA often times will grant acceptance of an allopathic internship year if it meets certain criteria however I am unsure as to what constitutes the presence of an allopathic internship year. Do all allopathic residencies, not matter how short, by definition contain an internship year?

Thanks for everyones input, it is greatly appreciated!

Nope

Do you guys in your EM residencies think the extra year is worth it? Or just a waste of time and $. When people's lives are in our hands perhaps an extra year isn't the end of the world.
