Hey guys,

This is Jason. I just checked my MCAT score online and now I don't know what to do. Here is my situation:

1. My MCAT score was 30Q (9 V, 11 PS, 10 BS)
2. My GPA is 3.6 in Biomedical Engineering at Washington University.
3. I have gotten mostly As in my pre-med classes, except for a C in Orgo II (I got an A in the lab class).
4. I'm a junior now.
5. I have much clinical experience. I am in the process of publishing 2 papers in a clinical radiology journal.

So, should I retake? All I want to do is get into medical school. Now, I'm worried...

Someone plz help.

Jason
🙁

wow...
I think that is a good stat.....
maybe not for harvard or yale...but good chance other schools.
I would at least apply with that stat.....

John

your MCAT score is fine. I would not retake it.

It's a matter of whether you'll be able to spend the time re-studying MCAT to do more meaningful stuff.

I got an 8 in verbal but I didn't retake. My counsellor said since English's my second language, most schools will be understanding. So far, 9 interview offers

Instead of spending time restudying and retaking MCAT, I spent half a year working with mentally ******ed people.

I guess the question is: will the time spend studying for MCAT be better spent elsewhere? Your MCAT is not horrible, but if you feel that you haven't showed your full capability and if you do have the time to re-study, go for it.

can you do much better? if yes, then retake. if not, 30q is good enough.

If you have done significantly better (3+ points) on practice exams, then I would probably take it again. It sounds like you could be competitive at a number of top schools if you get a 34+ type score.

yeah it would have been nice to get doubles across......but its decent enough and its not under 30 so i would stick with it.

I think youre fine, esp. since you goto a good school, have a good GPA, and are publishing. It depends on where you apply though, and Im sure your premed advisor will make sure you pick a good mix of schools.

If your score was much lower than practice (more than 3 pts lower), retake, otherwise, just make sure to get all your applications in early and youre in great shape.

Damn everyone that goes to a school where you can get clinical experience. Good luck to you all. I have none.

Yeah I'd say not to worry to much. On the same topic since you posted it.

I would like to get a general feel fro everyone on what to do. Just found out my score is 27,O and I have a 3.29, Is there still hope? ( I am a non-tradintional student also).

Not looking for smoke blowing just a no $h!t estimate.

Thanks

WOW! That's actually a REALLY decent score! APPLY!

Jason, Forget retaking. You are more than fine if the rest of your app (essays & LOR's -- EC's sound very strong) is strong.

Thousandth, depends on the strength of the rest of your app. If it is stellar, then you may be OK. But the GPA is a bit low, coupled with the minimum acceptable MCAT.

You both need to have applied to wide variety and range of schools. The other factor for you both is your strength as an interviewee.

Don't retake! I've got a slightly higher MCAT and a slightly lower gpa from a Wash-U like school, and I'm doing fine. Unless you are positive you could get above a 35, don't do it!

DON'T RETAKE

even if u want to get into a great school
i know people with 30's that got into top 5 schools
granted their gpa was high

its not worth the extra months of studying

sometimes,
its really not just about the numbers

i would spend that time doing something else
to make your app unique

I'm in a similar situation and I have 5 interviews so far (1 rejection - damn you Univ. of VT!). So unless you want to put yourself through hell again, don't retake.

i would try to raise GPA instead of MCAT scores
cuz for some schools a 3.27 may not make the computer cut off for interviews

Some schools wont even look at your application if you're gpa is below a 3.3? what if the MCAT scores around 31-32?

IS a 30 is still good, given my GPA is a measly 3.6???

-- I've looked at the stats and I'm only the "average" of accepted applicants.

You sound like a jackass.

Sorry if I sounded that way.

What I mean by that is that 3.6 and 30Q don't seem like great combinations. Neither one of them is too high. I know of people who have one that is really high compared to the other. Besides, the average for accepted students have higher GPAs and MCATs than I do. Is a 3.60 good enough, given that my MCAT is a 30Q? That's what I meant -- I did not mean to degrade anyone else.

Jason

I think it's important to remember that 29/30 and 3.5ish are averages for ACCEPTED students.

Obviously that means some higher, some lower. But your stats fall well within the range of ACCEPTED students. Don't sweat it. Just apply to a wide range of schools and start getting ready for your interviews 🙂

jason,
a 3.6 in biomed engineering at wash u and a 30Q on the mcat are a pretty good combination. how is your science gpa?
you have to remember that your 3.6 from wash u will be looked upon more favoraby than someone elses's 3.6 from a lesser known school.
you should only retake if you think you can do better and expect to go to a top school. as long as the rest of your app is good, you should get into schools like drexel etc... and have a decent shot at getting into more highly ranked schools.
what state are you a resident of?

Hey guys-

This is Quagmire. Jason, shut up and quit worrying. F'ing listen to what people are saying to you if you really wanted advice.

Quagmire

2 questions.

where do you want to go?
what state are you from (your instate school) and would you want to go there?

two questions.

1. where are you from? (what is your state school)
2. would you go to that state school?
