34M on my MCAT, Currently have a 3.68 overall GPA--Biochemistry Major, Gender and Women's Studies Minor

MCAT Score Breakdown:
13- Physical 11-Biological 10-Verbal

I'm feeling slightly (below) average right now

I'm not quite sure what happened on my writing section, but I feel confident that I will be able to write a strong personal statement and a recommendation from a professor attesting to my ability to write will help.

-Captain of my Varsity Tennis Team
-Have participated in the Anatomy Institute at Johns Hopkins observing surgeries, learning human anatomy (with the observation of cadavers)
- Observed orthopedic surgeries and assisted in pathology in Moshi, Tanzania
-Trained doctors to use Meditech 6.0, an electronic medical records program

I am concerned about my lack of patient interaction and I am unsure of how to get it. I am taking a year off next year (Graduating class of 2012, Applying to matriculate in 2013)--does any one have suggestion for my year off that will involve patient interaction?

Besides that--what are my chances? Where should I be looking?

Any and all help is welcome! Thank you!

1) I'm feeling slightly (below) average right now

I'm not quite sure what happened on my writing section, but I feel confident that I will be able to write a strong personal statement and a recommendation from a professor attesting to my ability to write will help.

2) I am concerned about my lack of patient interaction and I am unsure of how to get it. I am taking a year off next year (Graduating class of 2012, Applying to matriculate in 2013)--does any one have suggestion for my year off that will involve patient interaction?
1) Both stats you've provided us with are above the average for accepted MD students of 3.67/31.1. What is your BCPM? Average for that is 3.61.

2) If there is no hospital nearby campus where you can volunteer for 3-4 hours per week, then also check out nursing homes, hospice, rehab centers, and clinics. For the glide year, you might look into a gig with an organization like Americorps which offers medically-related jobs that are considered to be a social service, but come with a small living stipend. Or a research job, plus more clinical volunteering.

Besides that, you have yet to shadow a physician engaging in patient interaction (with a conscious US subject), so aim to find this experience.

Any plans for research? What about nonmedical community service near campus or home?

Thank you for your help! I have actually shadowed doctors in the U.S. many times--observed a few operations while I was at Johns Hopkins and also shadowed pediatricians in my area over winter break for the past two years. My favorite experience was probably shadowing a doctor in a pediatric emergency room--very interesting. I also am a member of my schools sexual assault advocacy group and tutor kids after school in the city nearby.

Anyways--thank you for your suggestions! I am looking into clinical research positions, but many of them are 2 year commitments and I am hoping to only take one year off. I would love to participate in clinical research though so I am going to keep looking into it. I am also looking into Americorps positions that begin this summer.
