37 MCAT/3.3 GPA Reapplicant

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
from what I've heard, a lot of schools have automatic cut-off screens around that GPA. That is probably the only thing you can improve at this point, so the fact that you're doing an SMP, along with applying early should greatly improve your chances this time around. My only other piece of advice would be to possibly extend your list to from 25 to 30 schools? (This is just to play it super-safe) Who knows in the end which one is the one that lets you in! 🙂

I would apply to 25 schools to be safe, however you destroyed the mcat which can make up for your subpar gpa

I can almost guarantee you that you would've at least gotten a few more interviews this past year had you submitted in June (early as possible). Applying that late probably hurts you a lot more than you think, especially with your GPA. The same advice is given to people with 4.0/28-30 MCAT, apply as early as possible to give yourself the best possible chance. In November, most schools are going to look at your app once and decide not to give you a chance, whereas if you apply in June it will sit on their desk for months and they might come around. SMP for GPA improvement is a great idea. I'm not sure what your list of schools looked like for this past year but you should apply to a healthy number of safer schools, I think you can get into a great school but I wouldn't fill up your time filling out long secondaries/letters for more than 5 top-20 reach schools unless you just have a crazy amount of free time, I think that will detract from your efforts at other schools.

You could re-apply next year to all the same schools unless you did not save your secondaries.

Also, what helps me is giving a call to the schools that did not accept me and asking for their opinion on my application.

Your mistake was being verified in November. That's like showing up 20 minutes late for the Easter Egg hunt... you're lucky to get one little waitlist jelly bean when you are that late.

Submit your application on June 1 and you are likely to have better luck. I wouldn't spend money on a SMP... it might be more cost effective to take a few upper level undergrad courses in biological scineces, biostats or something you haven't already taken. You can use the grades as an update to your file. A SMP is the kiss of death if you don't do well and teaches no marketable skills if you are unsuccessful at med school admission.

Yeah I know...I doomed my application by applying that late. I want to do an SMP because I feel it will make my M1 year a lot easier having learned the material already. I don't mind working hard, and I am pretty confident that I won't screw up this opportunity to do well in med school classes.

Will my uGPA still hinder my chances at being evaluated by some schools even after an SMP though? Aren't the uGPA and SMP GPA evaluated separately? So theoretically, could I still not make the cutoffs for a med school even if I theoretically ace an SMP?

Also does anybody know what schools have adcoms that will be able to offer me advice on my application?

Thanks for the help!

Ask the schools that you applied to last time for feedback regarding your appliation. Some are willing to offer that now through about July as it is their slow time of year.

If you want to pay for 5 years of medical school (SMP + med school) so that M1 year is "easier", be my guest. I don't know how undergrad gpa cut-offs and SMPs work as I see very little of that from where I sit (top 20).

Soon2bedoctor, did you apply to only MD schools or were there a few DO schools in there as well? Any particular method for how you chose your schools?

I applied to only MD schools. And I basically chose schools based solely on average GPA. I was very lucky to get the two interviews that I did, as they were schools that are probably considered reaches with my stats.

Your stats are just fine. Your MCAT definitely makes up for the GPA. Just apply earlier and you'll probably get in. I have very similar stats to yours, but applied relatively early (August-ish) and received 7 MD interviews (submitted 24). I think if I applied even earlier, maybe I would have received more.
