Hey all, deciding which book to get for Immuno. 'The Immune System' 3rd Edition by Parham is the required one, and is highly rated on Amazon, but the 4th Edition is also out. It (4th) only has 7 reviews, which are mostly scattered. I already have Sompayrac's 'How the Immune System Works,' and like it, just looking for a more in depth reference. Any opinions on 3rd vs 4th Edition?

If it's any consolation, our class used the 3rd edition for immunology last semester (400-level undergrad course). The professor told us that we didn't have to buy the newest edition, so I'd imagine the 3rd should be sufficient. As with most edition upgrades, it's mostly just figure and minutiae that change. I agree with Amazon though, it is an excellent text!

Third is fine and I don't think there was enough changes to warrent buying the fourth book(have pdf of third and got fourth as a Christmas present because my parents are weird)

lolol I'm just picturing someone opening a Christmas present to find a Parham book.

"Let's see what I got! Oh.. oh.. tha-.. thanks?"

Yeah I did get actual presents but my dad had to make sure that I opened that one first... Parham was really helpful though

It's a good book if you want/need to get more depth on a topic. I read it because it's required for us, but if it's not required then I wouldn't get it unless the lecture notes at your school suck. I think Sompyrac, OTOH, is a must have. It won't give you the same depth, but it's basically Costanzo for Immunology. It's a great book.

Unless you have a decent immuno background already, I would strongly recommend reading Sompayrac before Parham.
