3rd world method of resolving C.dif colitis.....

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
drinking bleach?

chloramphenicol i suppose...cheap as hell ....it should cover c.dif right?...**** im forgetting everything...hahaha....

nope, you're both wrong. it's a FECAL ENEMA. blegh!

That's right, and it's with a donor's feces, right? I've had c diff, but luckily vanco cleared it up and I didn't have to resort to that.

yeah....something about getting back the natural flora. no thanks. i'll stick with my clostridium buddy.

Yes, but if it's vanc-resistant, what else would you do? i would rather have a single shot of fecal enema than a colostomy - considering the next step in resistant C-diff is total colectomy. One of my surgery attendings claimed he had actually done this (fecal enema, that is). I can believe it too, because he re-fed one of our patients bile draining from an enterocutaneous fistula back through her J-tube to help her digest the tube feeds.

Hey I have a few lawyer friends, they could probably donate for ever but we'd have to pay them or if we could somehow just stuff medicare reform up their asses we'd be set.

My medicine team almost resorted to it for a refractory case last year. Poor man was s/p esophageal surgery, and ended up being NPO almost 2 months. No results with Flagyl, Vanc (per J-tube), and we seriously began looking to other alternatives.

Apparently, Turkish yogurt (Kefir) is another last-ditch solution. The bacteria in it are able to colonize the gut, and it occasionally works. Unfortunately, the guy didn't have any family to track it down, and we weren't allowed to give it, even if we could find it.

We did discuss the stool transplant - and decided that again, since he had no immediate family, the pharmacy would have to rise to the occasion, as it were.

Thankfully, the last course of vanc+flagyll finally worked.
