Hi there! I just got my MCAT results and am looking for honest advice with regards to my chances at schools in Canada and the USA for either this cycle or next years cycle. I'm a neuroscience major in Alberta.

GPA: 3.97

MCAT: 40: 14/12/14

Clinical volunteering: ER volunteer (100 hours), palliative care volunteer (20 hours), former geriatric rehabilitation volunteer (40 hours).

NO SHADOWING

Research: 3 summers of research in wet lab. 1 in high school, 2 in undergrad. 1 3rd author publication.

Nonclinical volunteering:
  • Crisis line volunteer (answer phone calls), leadership volunteer at crisis centre (train volunteers on lines) (total = 350 hours)
  • multiple clubs (pres. of vegetarian club, sr. vp of neuroscience student's association, tutor with another club). (total = many hours?)

Employment: Part time job throughout university as a receptionist in a walk in medical clinic. (almost 2 years)

I am not familiar with Canadian application standards.

For US, this cycle is essentially over. For next cycle your best shot is to apply to US schools with a history of accepting a significant # of internationals. Don't overlook the Ivies.

Take the rest of the year off and get some shadowing done. You want your application to be as strong as possible! Overall, you're competitive for the top 10's.

Thank you!

I'm sure that shadowing is necessary for the American schools, so I will get some during the coming summer if I cannot get into the two in province schools I'm applying to right now. Shadowing is not even mentioned strangely enough in Canada.

And I'm still in third year so I don't understand what you mean by take the rest of the year off?

Are you starting your third year? If so, then disregard what I said. I thought you were planning on applying this cycle. :O

In any case, continue your current extracurriculars, rack up some shadowing hours, maintain your high GPA, and maybe some hobbies! Good luck!
