I’m considering two different sites for surgery rotation.

First one is 1) 25 minutes away by driving from where I live 2) no residents so I think I get more responsibilities and work directly with attendings 3) apparently shorter hours like 40 instead of usual 60-70

Second one is 1) 10-15 minutes away by driving from where I live 2) there are residents there 3) longer hours than the first one

I’m not completely sure which one is the bette option. I like how I have shorter hours for first one since I get more time to study but I’m not sure about the longer drive and working directly with attendings who might have higher expectations than residents.

Are attendings generally harder to please than residents?

Upperclassmen did not give me clear opinions on these sites. One person recommended first one to me.

Which one should I go with?

Go for shorter hours so you can study for 2CK and shelf. You'll have plenty of time in your career to gain experience.

Your role as a med student is to learn the job of the intern. If there are residents, they're more likely to be able to show you practical stuff / make you useful.

Shorter commutes are better. Having time is everything.

Is surgery something you are interested in? During my surgery clerkship, I worked with 4 attendings and 1 resident fellow. With the exception of 1 attending who thought they were God and treated me and the staff like we didn't deserve to be in their presence, the PGY5 expected more, pimped more, and was less understanding than the other 3 attendings. The key (I learned this the hard way) is that when they all inevitably ask you if you're interested in surgery NEVER EVER tell them the truth if you aren't. Go with "I'm still deciding" as the safest answer. It was my last clerkship and I was burned out, so I unwisely told them I was interested in something else. That was a mistake as the God and PGY5 were nightmares after they were told.

Go with the first site with shorter hours because the surgery shelf is tough, but you can get LORs if you're interested in surgery and if you excell in/impress during the clerkship.
