I have been avaraging in the high 70s/low 80s on exams throughout my first two years of med school. I am looking for some honest advice on the correlation between preclinical scores and success during third year. I am most likely looking in to a competetive surgical subspecialty and want to know if this is is an adequate knowledge base to shine during my rotations. At this point I know I will have to do this to enter the field of my choice. Thanks.

Your averages on the shelf exams?

I'd worry about busting out a high Step I score. Don't worry about grades in pre-clinicals. Also, when you get to MSIII and IV, crush all your rotations (honors plus good LORs). As someone giving me advice one time once told me, do each rotation like it's the field you want to go into regardless as to whether or not you truly do.

Good luck,
