Im gonna be starting third yr in July, and was just wondering...is it good to schedule rotations with your significant other if we are in the same class? I can see the good side and the bad side of it, and right now am leaning towards doing it. Any help is appreciated! Thanks.

My reaction is that more often than not this would be a horrendously bad idea.

Just my opinion though, I'm pretty curious if anyone on rotations disagrees...

As someone who went through all 4 years of med school with my now husband....I wouldn't do it. We coincidently ended up doing one rotation together and, while it wasn't awful by any means, we def. preferred to not have that happen again. We are both competitive by nature, esp. my husband, and we both felt like we had to kind of "walk on eggshells" so as not to step on the other's toes during pimping sessions. Eg, when a question was asked we usually just looked at each other like "should I answer or do you want to" and we each always worried that the other might feel we were showing him/her up (sorry about the poor grammar, I hope that made some sense). Also, when presenting patients we both also worried about making the other look bad - not that one of us would do that purposefully, but for example, my husband made a very astute diagnosis on one of his patients that the resident actually missed, so needless to say he definitely stood out over me and that incident was brought up many times over the rest of the rotation. It didn't really bother me (I was proud of him!) but I can see how it could be difficult for some people.

Anyway, just my .02

We have some couples doing most (or all) of their rotations together. I can't talk about how this would be personally, but I do know that one of the girls was really unhappy on surgery when #1 - she and her boyfriend were on ortho together and the residents found out they were dating and then assumed she was only on ortho to be with her bf (and made comments about "how cute" it was that she was on ortho to be with him) and #2 - he had a certain resident before her, and the resident found out they were dating and spent a whole surgery asking her questions about their relationship. Both were kind of uncomfortable situations for her and didn't seem to sit well. I also agree with the above poster about getting competitive, or dealing with the repercussions if someone does better than the other in a rotation, etc.

I haven't heard of any couples signing up to be on the same teams, but I do know that couples at my school tend to sign up for the same order of rotations so that they can commiserate with each other and study for the same shelf exam together. Some couples who end up on different schedules altogether experienced friction when one person would be on surgery while the other wasn't and consequently felt neglected, but maybe that test is good? I don't know, I gave up on med school relationships a long time ago.

Being on the same rotation order wouldn't matter. share books and save $$$. But, you'll have to let each clerkship know not to schedule you on the same team, because more than likely some of your residents/attendings will consider on the job romance a professionalism breach. Word of advice for 3rd years-don't do anything to cause attendings to think you are unprofessional. Their motto is "knowledge can be taught, personality (& ethics) is forever"

Thanks for the responses everyone...I think we are just gonna wing it and not put down the same preferences for rotations, and see how that works...I agree with all of the above posts, didnt really realize what complications could occur. Hopefully we'll be alright not seeing each other that much...

Whoa, whoa, don't knock it so quick. Even if you get the exact same schedule, it's unlikely that you'll be on the same team more than once or twice over the year. The benefit being that you'll have roughly the same hours, thus allowing for more time to spend together outside of the hospital.

My history:
- Started dating fellow classmate at end of second year.
- Scheduled all of 3rd year together.
- Was only actually on her team for one half of one rotation. (Teams are assigned randomly.)
- There can be that competitive feeling, but as long as you guys are team players, and neither are obviously deficient, there'll be no problems.
- Admittedly, if there's a chance you might wanna break-up, having the same schedule will be awkward. (You'll still see them at lectures, tests, etc.)

On a side note, all of the married couples in my class (3?) scheduled 3rd year together.

Are you interested in doing the same/similar specialties? I know that a lot of people try to tailor their schedule to their interests. For instance, if I were interested in surgery, I'd try to do ob/gyn first. If I were interested in psych, I'd try to avoid doing my psych rotation first, etc.

Your interests can also change where you want to do your rotations. For instance, if you're interested in EM or trauma, you might do your surgery rotation in an inner city hospital. But if you're absolutely set on derm, you might do your surgery rotation at a slower, less busy hospital.

I would have had a hard time trying to create a schedule with someone who was interested in a different specialty. I think that that would have created more frustration.

Even if you're on different rotations, you can still spend time together. Lots of people are forced to be on different schedules than their SO (ex: people who are dating a year above them or a year below them, or people who are dating people who go to other schools or are not in med school at all), and they manage.

Ah, it seems I sort of misunderstood this post....I read it as he wanted to be on teams with his SO, which is why I said that would be a bad idea. If, in fact, the OP simply meant same rotation schedule and not same teams then I think that would be fine. My husband and I scheduled our 3rd year so that we had similar schedules (ie. same vacations but not necessarily on the same exact rotation although a couple times we were). And like I said we only ended up being on the same team once and def. did not want to do that again.

Like others have said, I would def. NOT advise you to be on teams together, but if you just want to have similar schedules, like both be on outpatient rotations together or surgery together, I say go for it.
