Curious what folks think of these. In theory, it sounds great. Wondering just how much tougher it might be, especially if anyone is doing it now/knows someone who did. Thanks.

Also wondering if 3yr undermines your chances for a competitive residency. I'm interested in psych. I have previous pubs (before med school, not 1st author though), but maybe the 4yr programs allow you to better pad your application via research and more away rotations?

My school just opened a three year, but after I matriculated. In your shoes, I would have jumped on it. Now that I'm in school, I appreciate having breaks sometimes, and the debt (the primary purpose of the 3 year track at my school is debt reduction) really will just wind up being a few more months of living off a teacher's salary in my case.

Some people love it though. Maybe some 3 year track students will chime in.

I don't think the material is significantly tougher; at most schools, 4th year is kind of messing around, so you just lose that time. But you do skip summer break, etc.

And part of the reason (at my school) you can skip 4th year is that you don't have to do the match. You're automatically placed in one of our primary are residencies if you pass your classes and boards.

I had a friend that went to NYU and matched OBGYN last year. He didn’t have any issues

@Hollow Knight so at your school, is there the option to try to match at a different school for residency? Sounds like it might be harder to do away rotations for the purpose of bolstering your app though.

@Cornfed101 I think you're saying he matched at a different school. That's great to hear! Please correct me if your meaning was otherwise.

Yeah he did the accelerated 3 year program at NYU and didn’t have any issues matching OBGYN elsewhere

At my school you're locked in. But I can only speak for my school. The type of people it's built for are the primary care types who want a lower debt burden in exchange for deciding in advance they want to do IM/FM/peds.

Hackensack has a 3 year program with a few different specialties available. However practically all the students in it match locally.
