Hi everyone,

I am a non-trade applicant with PhD applying this cycle.
I have a non-US undergrad degree, but have a US MS and PhD (graduating in May).

I took a template from @amateurpupil to fill out my information.

Thanks everyone in advance! I'd really appreciate if you guys could give me any feedback (literally anything).

GPA

US converted undergrad GPA (3.86) - not sure how important this would be..
4.00 cGPA (based on 64 credits from US grad school including pre-med pre-reqs)
4.00 sGPA (based on only 17 US undergrad pre-med pre-reqs more to add before matriculation) - can someone let me know if graduate courses can count towards sGPA?

MCAT

Scheduled for next May - I am quite anxious about it :( how detrimental is this?
- I have not had chance to take any FL yet... wish i could give you a number for better idea

State of Residence/Country of Citizenship

MI resident, US permanent resident

Ethnicity/Race

Asian

Undergraduate Institution

Top 10 non-US university from QS/THE rank

Clinical Experience

Scribe: ~400 hours
Clinical volunteer: ~200 hours (does volunteering with simple tasks in hospital count as clinical volunteering experience?)

Research Experience and Productivity

~9 years of experience from undergrad until PhD. <20 peer-review articles

Shadowing Experience and Specialties Represented

~100 hours of in-person shadowing (gynecologic oncology)
~100 hours of virtual shadowing (how do schools view this?)

Non-Clinical Volunteering

<100 hours of volunteering at Red Cross

Other Extracurriculars

  • Humanitarian group during UG
  • Drummer
  • Recreational footballer

Relevant Honors Awards

  • Various research awards
  • UG Dean's lists
  • academic recognitions
  • scholarship/fellowhsip

Anything else not listed that might be important

Two MS degrees (one non-US, another US)
6 month co-op with Microsoft

School List

I had to filter out schools that strictly require a US undergrad degree (e.g., NYU, Mayo, Northwestern). I also had to cut out schools that require a very exhaustive list of required courses (other than science) from US schools (e.g., JHU, UNC), because I don't think I would be able to take them by matriculation.

P.S. if anyone needs the list of these schools, let me know!

Your non-US grades will not produce a GPA. You do need to send your equivalent transcript to AMCAS regardless. Your performance with prereqs from your master's degree will be evaluated by committees. Keep checking with schools.

@Mr.Smile12 hi! thanks for the advise. Just wanted to clarify, am I required to send my evaluated foreign transcript to AMCAS?

Virtual shadowing is of little value.

Will have to wait to see what you get on the MCAT. Washington, UMD, OHSU, and UNC take few OOS students without ties to the state or region. USUHS has a military requirement. Many of the other schools on your list are also very competitive. You have the extensive research experience for them, but will need a high score on the MCAT as well.

Do not include virtual shadowing. Top 20 schools are not realistic with your MCAT of 512.
I suggest these schools with your stats:
U Florida
Florida State
Florida Atlantic
Florida International
Central Florida
NOVA MD
Miami
USF Morsani
Wake Forest
Virginia Commonwealth
George Washington
Drexel
Temple
Jefferson
Penn State
Hackensack
New York Medical College

Albany
Vermont
Quinnipiac
Tufts
Oakland Beaumont
Western Michigan
Medical College Wisconsin
Rosalind Franklin

@ebebebe

Why do you want to switch to medicine?

Are you interested in academic medicine as a career?

In what field was your PhD?

Always wished I could do medicine some day.
I’d love to balance clinical practice with academic one day.

My PhD is in biology.

I'm curious to know how you explained that in your personal statement. It's a big change in the trajectory of your career.
