4.0 scale???

What is 4.0 scale? Is it the same as AMCAS scale? Also, I heard your A+'s don't matter because of 4.0 scale? Is that true? So, does A- count as 4.0? Just very confused. <img src="confused.gif" border="0">

No, A+ is a 4.0, A is 4.0 and A- is 3.7. Giving higher for an A+ is for high school.

They have to ignore the + in A+ as a lot of schools don't assign them. Its their way of standardizing GPAs. + and - count for all other letter grades in a 4.0 scale.

Which sucks for those of us who attend schools where there is no plus or minus system, just stragiht letter grades. An 80 is the same as an 89 at my school which is a B

On the other hand, there's no way in hell students at my school would approve of different grades for +/-. Actually, they wanted to institute that here and do a trial run. It never even got to the trial run because of huge student protestation. Straight letter grades all the way, because this school is so damn hard you need all the help you can get to maintain a good GPA. We don't care that someone with a B- is getting the same grade as someone with a B+. It took just as much work, just some people happen to understand a little clearer or something. Granted, it makes the university as a whole maybe look a little less competitive than schools with a +/- system, but it doesn't detract that much and the students don't care. If they implemented +/- here, we'd be so furious.

Well I think thats a little bass ackwards. A B+ is is signifigantly higher than a B- and should be treated as such, otherwise what would separate students? Life isn't fair, somethings aren't about how much you put into a job, but on how well you do the job. Some people can grasp things better quicker and they do deserve better grades. Would you want two people, one who worked harder but missed a few more questions, to both get a 32 on the MCAT? Thats crap.

In my school, engineering is no +/- and arts and science (which includes biology) is +/-. I'm bioengineering, so +/- it doesn't count for me. but, medschools will still count it.

anyway, they a survey/study and found no +/- will give higher GPA for most students. but, the difference is really small. It makes little difference, sometimes you'll get A-s, sometimes b+s. I sure wish though, that i could get a 4.3 for classes i mustered an A+. Hey, it was tough to get an A+, why can't i get credit for it.

It probably wont make a significant difference whether or not there is +/-, but really theres little you can do, just got to do as well as you can and accept your grades.

System without +/- definitely gives HIGHER GPA for good students. Just think about it, good students who get their grade generally above 90% will ALWAYS get an A (4.0) in no +/- schools, while THE SAME good students who generally get grades above 90% will get, B+ or A- or A. That IS A LOT OF DIFFERENCE.

In fact, the difference is so much that definitely influeces a pre-med student's profile and likelihood of success.

My onw case, I got 88.9 in my Chem II and 90 in my Cal II and 93 in my Bio II and 94 in my Bio I, I all got A for them. (Thank my nice retired chem professor.) I GOT 4.0 FOR ALL THESE COURSES!!!!!

just to play devil's advocate, if they had stuck to the system, chem is a B, thus gpa is 3.75.

Then in the +/- system (with 88-90=B+, 90-92=A-, 92-100=A) you have a 3.3,3.7,4.0,4.0... averages out to a 3.75 🙂

I thought

97 - 100 = A+ = 4.0
93 - 96.9 =A = 4.0
90 - 92.9 = A- = 3.75
87 - 89.9 = B+ = 3.3
83 - 86.9 = B = 3.0
80 - 82.9 = B- = 2.75

The +/- system only helps those students who are poorer in their academic ability. For example an A- can drop an A student's GPA but a C+ compared to a C can help the other students GPA.

I don't quite understand the logic here. The +/- system just yields more grades to give it doesn't help or hurt anyone. If you get an A, you get an A. If you don't get an A, you don't get an A -- the same for either system.
