^ This.

Although, as the Mayans called it, and all the apocalypse callers, the world ends 12/21/2012, soooo.... all things won't matter (deficit, taxes, obamacare, etc)

No! NO!

This was the one place on the internet (or real life) where people weren't talking about Obama being (or about to be) reelected. Let's keep it that way.

Doesn't the electoral college make certain people's votes worth more than other people's votes?

It may seem like it. If you want to play that way, Al Gore should have won the 2000 election. But does it matter? Obama's likely going to win the popular vote.

It must be rough to have the election called before your polls close. Sorry Alaska 🙁

Yay!!! I was scared for a minute. The thought of Romney as president is frightening.

Well the electoral college protects the smaller states from being drowned out from the big guys like California and Florida so they are decently fair.

As far as how this affects pre-allo, it does affect medicine and healthcare in alot of ways...although it doesn't seem as obvious in this thread.

It's not a question of who should've won this or any previous election. It's about a process that doesn't make sense and should be changed.

The popular vote brought on legalizing gay marriage and pot and we also indirectly affect the electoral college votes by picking who represents us. It isn't a broken system because if we depended on only the majority vote we'd only have 5 or so states speaking for the rest.

That's already what we have, and that's not the point. First of all, if the majority voted for pot or gay-marriage, or whatever, then by all means that's perfectly fine, that's what a democracy is! I'm not sure how you can argue that an electoral college more accurately reflects the wishes of the public than a popular vote. 😕

Because there is a greater population in California and Florida than North Dakota but each state needs their own voice. It helps keep things even and fair when the general populace don't know what they're doing. If the majority voted for a Hitler-esque figure, who would stop us if it depended only the majority?

I see your point but in a democracy the majority of people should decide what their future should look like.

They do if they think about it. YOU pick who will represent you in the electoral college. So yes, the people that go up for the sole purpose of deciding who the President will be don't contribute that much if they don't know about the electoral college. The general public isn't educated enough to make the right decisions. Now if there was a huge difference between the popular and electoral, that would raise more eyebrows and might bring more attention to the issue.

What??? If a state has a greater population then they will by the definition of a voting majority have a greater voice. What are you saying??

general populace doesn't know what they are doing? Are you in favor of a democracy or not? 😕

So what you are saying is that yes, not everyone's vote means the same, and we should decide that people who live in larger states are more educated and their vote should count more???

I don't think you understand that this isn't a democracy. Recite the Pledge of Allegiance again and see where we stand.

The electoral college system works or doesn't work depending on how you want to spin it. I personally believe in giving everyone an equal voice and not drowning them out.

My title says it all.

Huh? If a candidate can win the election without winning the popular vote then CLEARLY people's voices are NOT equal.

And yes, America is a democracy.

I agree, but good luck changing an article in the constitution that existed since 1789 or so.

...we're a republic. I'm done here.

...we're a republic. I'm done here.

Not so simple what that means.

1. Obama has control of the popular vote.

2. http://lmgtfy.com/?q=Is+America+a+Democracy?

Now the sign really makes sense.

I know Obama has the popular vote, as I mentioned earlier in the thread, this is not about who won or who should've won this or any previous election. It's about a system that doesn't make sense and should be changed because of how theoretically it could fail as well as the message it sends.

Not so simple what that means..

Yet you can't explain it, because you don't know the definition of republic. Word of advice: don't go on about America being a democracy when you can't even articulate the meaning of the word.

People butthurt over this is kinda entertaining to see. Fox News provided some interesting entertainment and browsing Facebook with gems like "Time to move to England, Queen Elizabeth would walk circles around nobama", "God is weeping up in heaven right now", and "It's called the white house for a reason, you fail America!"

At least the pot statuses are funny 😎

1) America is not a democracy. It's a federalist presidential constitutional republic. Federal - the federal government vs. the state governments. Presidential - we have a head to our government, and the three brances, etc. Constitutional is obvious. Republic - people are elected by the people to represent them in their governments. A popular vote (on potentially every issue), as in a democracy, America is not.

2) The electoral system, in its original incarnation, serves to both protect states rights (thus establishing the difference between a Constitutional Amendment, which must be ratified by the States, and the passage of a federal bill), as well as protect minority rights from the tyranny of the majority. Just because a majority of people in America want something does not mean that should be foisted upon every citizen in the country - that's why the States even exist in the first place.

It's important to inform yourself as to how the process actually works, and why it works the way it does, before disagreeing with it.

I was referring to the poster's comment about how America is not a democracy because it is called a Republic in the pledge of Allegiance. I said "Not so simple" because the terms democracy and republic can have varying levels and meanings. Please don't lecture me on what I know or don't know, I'm really not in the mood. I've seen your posts on SDN and respect you and enjoy reading your contributions here. Please don't start anything with me about semantics and/or personal attacks.

yeah, I see the point of the electoral college to be in place, though it is not a true democracy because the vote of those "less educated" people could easily worth less. I think this situation is sort of a double edge sword. In the literal sense of the word, this is not a democracy.
