I heard a rumor that general surgery residency might be shortened from five years to four years. That's kind of hard to believe. Anybody know if there's any truth to this?

Rumor
1 : talk or opinion widely disseminated with no discernible source
2 : a statement or report current without known authority for its truth

meaningless

adj : having no meaning or direction or purpose; "a meaningless endeavor"; "a meaningless life"; "a verbose but meaningless response"

I think if anything.. they are trying hard not to increase the duration.

Half true. There are a number of 4+2 proposals that would lead to board certification in general surgery - i.e. four years GS and two years vascular leading to BC in GS and VS. I have not heard anyone suggesting certification in GS alone after 4 years.

Yeh, I thought it was too good to be true.

There's a much better chance that gen surg will become 6 years instead of 4.

But the chances of either happening are remote.

Do you know of anyone on the ABS who supports a 6 year GS residency?

As noted above, most likely any action taken by the ABS would be to lengthen the term of residency however, no member has publically made a statement as a member of the board that residency should be lengthened. However, all of the members trained under the old-system and could be reasonably expected to view the 80 hr workweek and its effects on training with a skewed perspective.

That said, the "rumor" was probably referring to fast-tracking people into subspecialties (ie, 4+2).
