Hello everyone, I am currently thinking about applying this cycle (just graduated with a music major and physics minor), and I want some advise on my situation.

My stats: 41Q MCAT 3.6 cGPA/3.4 sGPA
ECs:
300+ hours of hospital volunteering across four different departments
400+ hours of community service with one organization
80+ hours of shadowing - three phsicians
2 years of research under a medical school physician
2 years of tutoring experience
some other minor community/club involvements (no leadership role, sadly)

Music Activities:
For the past three years, I spent, on average, 30 hours a week practicing my instrument (oboe). I've won multiple campus-wide recitals, and I received high distinction in my music major - did an honors thesis and went through a very rigorous evaluation process. If I don't apply this cycle, i'll probably take a year off and do some music-related activity.

I think my app is fairly strong, all things considered, but I am worried about a minor disciplinary infraction i was found guilty of. Basically, when I was a sophomore, I made a foolish mistake and accidentally took some precious music sheets from the school's library. I was doing research in the libary for a music class, and I took some material with me out of the library. When I realized that I wasn't supposed to take the sheets out of the library, I immediately returned them. Unfortunately, the library staff reported me and i was convicted of theft by the university. But because of the situation and the fact that it wasn't my INTENT to steal, I was only given a formal reprimand - the lowest level of disciplinary sanction at my school. This incident isn't noted on my transcript, but i do have a disciplinary record on file.

I understand that "stealing" would look pretty bad to adcoms. But i didn't mean to steal - i simply made a foolish mistake without knowing the library's rules. At my school, even first time alcohol offenses are given more severe sanctions than a reprimand.

I am wondering how will this mark impact my ove5rall application and all the things i was able to achieve? will my application be dumped instantly? or will the adcoms read my situation and understand that i had absolutely no malicious intent?

If you can explain this in your PS like you've explained hear, then it should, hopefully appear to any Adcom member that you were guilty of being stupid, rather than having any criminal intent.

The whole mess shouldn't prevent you from getting interviews...we've interviewed thieves, cheaters and convicted drug pushers, even! Naturally, they got rejected. i'm more optimistic about your chances.

good luck!

I'm sure with your stats most schools will be receptive of your explanation. Although I would try talking with some important people at your university and see if you can get it taken off your record.

i know that my MCAT is absolutely stellar - i spent around a year studying for it. but do you think that my science gpa is a bit on the low side? since i have a record, i feel that i cant have any othe weakness in order to be considered above someone with no records.
