499 MCAT?

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
You don't mind DO do you? That cars is concerning though.
Ya I'm aiming for DO and was really just aiming for anything above 500. Thought I got least 123 on cars since my practice exams have been around there. I'm orm, and english isn't my first language, but I've been living in the states for a while so that's probably not a good excuse. Fml, dunno what to do.

I mean they're decent, kind of cookie cutter + unique stuff. But I'm worried I'll get screened out since I have an mcat less than 500 and I was planning on applying only established schools and not the newer ones since I'm kinda skeptical about them. Do you think I'll be okay for NSU?
Just cast a broad application. Your high GPA is more indicative of your ability to handle the hard sciences.

Guys...he has a 120 on cars.

This is a mandatory retake
That would be my first recommendation but, some DO schools favor GPA over MCAT. For instance VCOM are cray about GPAs. But I agree with you. It's ultimately up to OP if he/she wants to retake.

Cast a wide net targeting newer DO schools and apply before labor day. There are a bunch of schools that have MCAT medians in the 499-502 range. Science sections are still above average and your GPA is great.

Any suggestions for schools?

Tough for me to say since I'm not an adcom officer and I'm in this process myself. I suggest using the search function on sdn and looking for people who have a similar score as you. Look at the list that people like goro/faha/ etc have recommended to them

A 120 CARS score means you did only slightly better than just randomly guessing on every question in the section. I get that you're ESL, but there's no way that a 120 is reflective of your true abilities.

I would definitely apply DO with a 499. If you don't get something by February then plan for a retake and apply the following year. However; your science sections and GPA could help land you an interview somewhere. Don't rush a retake now and mess up a second MCAT.

I'm not sure what schools you should apply to, but don't apply to any Touro's because you'll get screened out. I know LECOM has a 497 pre secondary screen so you should be good there.

In Conclusion; you might have to eventually retake and bring up that CARS score. But a small chance is still a viable chance, so I would take it and apply.

What's wrong with doing a year of Post Bac? At many schools, 1 yr of post bac and 4 yrs of med school is still cheaper than 4 yrs of med school. I think LECOM is priced like that. Get a year of Post Bac under your belt, and you will probably do better on Step 1 than if you didn't, in my opinion. If you are a good residency applicant with good board scores, no one will care if you did a Post Bac year. A neighbors son in law could not get into med school, did a year Post Bac at Temple, now in neurosurgery at Cleveland Clinic. Good luck, and Best Wishes. Hope this helps

Apply to loads of schools...
VCOM's, Touro's, LECOM, ACOM, BCOM, ARCOM, ICOM, MUCOM, and WVSOM for starters.

Edit - 120 on CARS is a red flag. Apply, but be prepared to take another year and raise that section by 3 points at least.

Don’t apply to BCOM, it will screen you by section.

I thought the Touros have a strong preference for high MCAT scores?

Well, if you look at Nevada, their average last year wasn’t that high. At least, by the numbers they posted.

Yeah that CARS will hit you hard. But if you want to apply target the newer DO schools. Don't apply to CUSOM though they will screen you out with that 120.

I am really curious what the pro’s think about CARS and how they view the section when the individual performs much stronger in the other three sections. Obviously, the cutoffs fro DO and MD are different. However, does a strong performance in the other three sections give you a fighting chance?
