Hi Everyone,

I want to know how helpful an away rotation in anesthesiology really is? I go to a school in the west and last I heard, an away rotation would really only be helpful if I do one on the east coast to show that I can survive on the east coast as well and get a letter from that school. But my question is this...does it really matter? Does an away rotation really make all that much of a difference?

I am wondering if all the effort of applying to aways is worth it if there is no guarantee in the first place...while browsing SOME of the school websites, they even mention that an away at their institution will not change/have an effect on how the applicant is ranked...

Anyhow, any input would be appreciated...please keep in mind that I am asking about anesthesiology specifically.

I think it depends on the specialty. For anesthesia, I don't think away is very helpful. For other specialties, like ortho, away is more important

I've also heard that anesthesia aways are unnecessary, but I think if there's one program you really want to go to, why not away there? Assuming you can impress them while you're there.
