My class unfortunately has several students going into ophtho, so the competition for electives during the first two (pre-application) blocks is really tough. I was able to secure one 3-week rotation but that was unfortunately it. I'll have two letters from ophthalmologists, so that won't be a problem, but is taking only one ophtho elective frowned upon? I'm trying to get into another that starts in September just for exposure/practice but it's also quite popular. Thanks for your input
Can you do an away rotation?
I was trying to avoid an away for financial/scheduling reasons so I have not applied for any
Financial? The app process is really expensive, but worthwhile. Like taking out an extra loan worthwhile...
In terms of 3 weeks... That doesn't seem like enough. Maybe if you have a lot of extracurricular or community service ophthalmology activities that could supplement a short rotation period. Have you have any other ophtho exposure? I'm assuming yes since you're choosing this specialty.
