I would like to set up Pediatric electives at Lutheran General and Christ in Chicago. I was wondering if anyone has done electives at these hospitals and if so what specialties at these hospitals do you recommend setting electives up in and which doctors are best to work with? Thanks! 🙂

Both are absolutely great hospitals to rotate at and to learn. Both have very friendly directors and faculty in general. You probably cant go wrong with pretty much any rotation. If you wanna take it easy dont do a subinternship obviously, although the less time consuming of the two will be at lutheran only because the days end earlier.

Christ has the busiest cardiology program in Illinois and one of the best pediatric heart surgeons in the world (Dr. Ilbawi...and no I am not exaggerating). If you have any interest in cards, this would be a great experience for you. Also, the heme-onc division at Christ is also very good and the two attendings they have seem good to work with (although this is based on an extremely limited interaction with each of them).

Alrighty, since I did my peds rotation at Christ, and we also rotate thru lutheran...

I think if you want to do Cards, I've actually heard GREAT things about Cardiology at Lutheran. Christ does have the best surgeon around (Ilbawi- I know you're not kidding!), but I've heard the rotation at Lutheran is better- you learn more, and they have a great cards program too. I did Peds Endo at Christ, and LOVED it- great attending, who loves teaching and will let you do anything. I'd highly recommend heme-onc, though. The attendings are amazing, you'll work hard but you'll get to know more of the residents and have experiences both inpatient and outpatient. The other two I'd recommend at Christ are either GI or Pulm with Dr. Akhter. Both attendings are (to my understanding) a little more influential in residency selection. Although, if I had my choice, I'd do heme/onc at Christ.

Hope this helps... good luck!
