Hello,

I'm interested in going into internal medicine in the future, and would like to do a 4th year medicine rotation in september in a hospital that has a residency spot that I'm interested in, right after my board exam in August. However, I just read in my 4th year policy manual that this hospital does not allow students to schedule any residency interviews during that time. That being said, I was wondering how common it is to have to schedule interviews in september? Is it a big disadvantage not having the whole month of september available for interviews?

Thanks for your responses

The majority of residency interviews are from November to January, and there are a few programs that stretch interview season to either October or February. But I haven't heard of interviews being offered in September, so I think you'll be fine.

I think the only programs that start interviewing in September are the early match ones (urology, ophtho, peds neuro). And I believe those are rare too. For normal match, they are usually from November to January with a few schools that start in October and end in February. Also, most programs offer multiple dates so you can easily choose a later month to interview. Do your Sub-i, interviewing will not be a huge issue.

Even in early match, I have never heard of a September interview date. Earliest I've heard of was Oct. 2. Event then, that will only be their first date of several you can choose from. You should have no issues during that month.

Rarely some elective people will give you problems about time off for interviews. Be smart about it. Take time off if you need it (6 interviews in 2 weeks or something). Generally people are pretty understanding, but they aren't going to give you credit if you show up for 20 percent of the elective.

Thank you everyone for your responses! That was very helpful
