What are the disadvantages of staying behind for the 4th year in a pre-med program..instead of applying for med school in the third? (I kind of want to write a thesis lol)

there are no disadvantages. you'd get to take a year off, which is the biggest advantage there is.

👍👍

I'll agree with that. I took my 4th year to write an undergraduate thesis and am taking my year off working in a Pathology lab. Both experiences have given me droves of things to talk about in interviews, have given me a little bit of time to spruce up my app., and have helped me solidify my decision to go into medicine.

You can apply at the end of your third year and still write a senior thesis. It doesn't have to be either/or. If you want the entire thesis experience on your application, though, I guess you will have to apply at the end of your fourth year and take a year off.

I would strongly suggest writing a thesis. I wrote one and it was actually a lot of fun. It gives you a chance to pursue some original ideas, it looks really good on a resume, and it is not as challenging as it sounds.

Also agreed. Just to clarify, I postponed applying for reasons completely independent of my thesis. What I said before still stands, though.

Writing a thesis was one of the intense experiences I had as an undergrad. There were times when I was frustrated and annoyed, and my topic didn't really condense until March or so, but then there were moments when I would get a fantastic insight at like 4 AM and just jump out of bed and start writing.

A friend of mine said that writing a thesis was like being pregnant. It takes 9 months, everyone asks about it constantly, you're tired and overworked and would really like to go out drinking but can't. But when you're holding the bound copy in your hands, it's pretty much the best feeling in the world.

If you have an idea that excites you, do it. You won't regret it.
