Hey guys. So, I majorly screwed up my first year in college by partying too much, taking too many courses, so I ended up with 5 C+'s in General Biology (2 semesters), Organic Chemistry (2 courses) and a math course. However, since then, I have been getting a 4.0 GPA for 6 semesters. Do you guys think I should retake those classes?

I also have another question that I would like to ask you guys. Do these classes count towards my sGPA? If not, which ones don't?

See FAQ at top of thread for courses that count. As far as retaking ... no. Only retake C- and lower. Fix these grades with an upward trend and higher grades in the same field, but in upper division, harder courses.

Never mind. Found the answer. Thanks for all the help guys.

Hopefully they will see that I've improved quite a lot and forgive me for doing so badly the first year.

FYI, math does not count towards science gpa in AACOMAS. It does count in your BCPM gpa for AMCAS.

Also, engineering classes count for science gpa in AACOMAS and don't count in BCMP for AMCAS.

I guess my main concern is: could I still get into a DO school with 4 C+'s in prerequisite science courses but 4.0's for 3 years with advanced classes.

The way AACOMAS does their grades is honestly superior.

It is possible to get into D.O. schools with 5 C+'s (let alone 9 of the variety of C's - plus, minus, and straight - for prereqs). Highly not recommended, but if it does happen, do what Jaggerplate said and retake the C-'s, if any, but if not, then do well in the upper div classes. The upward trend is your friend, and what I like to call the "strength of schedule" (like the BCS - football reference) may play a part.

Speaking as a Californian student, the institutions have a rule that you can retake classes that are C- and below, and they'll replace your grade with the more recent score. At least for my undergrad institution, you would not be allowed to retake a class if you got a C or above. For a more general view, a C- is like you just barely passed the class, slightly below average.

When I was reading the FAQ sticky, I came across this:

Mental/Physical Illness
Physiological Psychology"

I took Physiological Psychology, does it count as a science course?

If it makes you feel any more optimistic, I had a very similar first year (except I had a few more C's than you) and I'll be starting medical school this fall. I had a few interviews and everything went fine, I was never even asked about it. My conclusion, a strong upward trend seriously helps and rids a good deal of doubt the ad-coms may have about your first year.

I got the following:

Intro to music: C
Intermediate algebra: C
Gen Chem 2: C- followed by W (followed by A)
OChem 1: C
Neuroscience lab: C+

Do well in everything else and don't worry about it.

I think it depends on the dept. I took this class through the psych dept, so I did not count it as science.

If someone had this count as science, please do let us know? Especially, if it was as part of the psych dept.

Any physiological psych class or behavioral neurobiology, regardless of department, will count.
