This isn't about me, but someone I know is in their first semester of college and is very quickly finding out they aren't the least bit ready for the transition and now has to decide whether to stick it out and run the very real risk of 5 F's or just drop and definitely take 5 WF's. Obviously both look horrible, but what would look worse if this person tries to come back to school later on.

I'd take 5W's if I were that person. Withdrawing from classes are pretty bad but since it's the first semester, adcoms will be forgiving of it as long as the person can show academic growth for the next 4~5 years.

Thanks, but does your opinion change given that at this point in the semester they will be WF's and therefore result in a GPA of 0.00? I honestly don't know what this person should do, part of me wonders since her grade will be the same maybe she should just stick it out to prove she wouldn't quit, idk.

WF is the same as an F. Your friend should try their best to salvage the semester.

Both will be viewed the same. WF and F are considered the same in a lot of programs. What is more important is that your friend really brings up her GPA. she needs to really sit down with her instructions, tutors, you name it and develop a solid plan for drastically improving her GPA. That carries a lot of weight. Later on down the road, she should be prepared to justify this, whether it is a direct question about these grades, or a question about strengths/weaknesses. Turn this weakness into a strength and it will not be the end of the world

She should 100% talk to her adviser or someone at his/her college. She might be eligible for taking "academic/medical leave" or something that will look better on her record. No school wants to give someone all Ws who is clearly checked out of this semester (whether it be for medical, mental health, whatever reasons). But she needs to start the footwork now because they might not be as sympathetic the closer it gets to December.

Would it be possible for your friend to drop a couple of the classes and focus there efforts on a couple of classes. 2 or 3 Cs alongside the WF's will make it look a little better and somewhat salvage the gpa

Don't Fs DESTROY your GPA, while Ws don't count?

In this case, it's a no brainer to go for a W.

I guess from what the other posters are saying, WF is basically an F GPA-wise.....?

I once had a 20 and then a 40 for an exam and midterm for a class. Basically I was destined to fail. What did I do? I proactively sought out my professor and explained to him that I was struggling. He gave me an ultimatum, he will drop the 20, but only if I went to his office hours and tutoring(he has me sign a attendance sheet) every single day we have class.

What did I do? I did exactly that. Come the final I got an 80 and he kept his word and dropped the 20.

Your friend should speak to every single professor of possible. See if you could somehow make a deal/explain the situation. Focus on whatever classes can be salvaged. Most teachers outside of a few that shouldn't be teachers want the best for you. But your friend has to earn it.

WF is a 0, same as an F to most. Drop 2 classes and work your ass off for 3 Cs

Looks like this girl might be in luck, for all the bad Hurricane Matthew caused it delayed her school's calendar. She's definitely dropping her classes but it will only result in a W, rather than a WF.

YAAASSSS

how in the world does someone end up with all F's? did she just not show up for classes? and if she is a freshman, her classes can't be that hard that she can't even manage to pass one class. that pathetic.

I seriously hope that this person will not be a dentist. Or any other healthcare professional. Ever.

^^^ these people are being ridiculous. If someone judged me on one semester when I was 18 years old, I wouldn't be fit to work anywhere.

Doctors aren't perfect. People are allowed to make mistakes. There's so many years to live. One year of "messing up" doesn't mean that she can't recover, prove her dedication to health and learn the skills to become a good student, and work as a health professional the next 50 years/til retirement.

many students at UB's dental program had their gpa's smashed to bits at their first university. it took them a community college re-try, and another 4 year college entrance to make it to dental school. not impossible.

There is a difference between trying and failing vs not trying at all. To have a 0 gpa mean that person is not trying at all. Probably did not even show up to a single class for the whole semester. Out of 5 classes and she cant even pass one to help her gpa a little?

I agree, it never too late to chase her dream, but it apparent that the time is not now for her. I recommend she goes out in the real world and actually work to build up her work ethic and get life experience because she doesnt have what it take to succeed in college right now.
