I work at a retail pharmacy and we received a compound order for a 1 year old as stated in the thread title. It was not covered by the pt's insurance, so we didn't make it.

My question, which my pharmacist could not answer for me is: 5/459 ~ 0.01% w/w. Why would the MD order this instead of a pre made tube of 0.01%?

edit* answered my own question. Maybe i should have checked the shelf before i made this thread.

First of all, its 1%, not 0.01%. Second of all, when young children have eczema, they have verrrrrry sensitive skin. The advantage of the Acid Mantle base is it's acid neutral and less likely to irritate the skin.

What does "Acid Mantle base is it's acid neutral" mean? There is no such thing as acid neutral.

Acid Mantle, has a pH of 4.5-5.5 which is acidic. Interestingly enough, it mimics the skins natural pH of 4.5-5.5.

Interestingly enough, that's what it means. I have no studies to back me up and it may all be the hype of the drug company. But it's acid neutral to the skin. Hence the name ACID-Mantle......

I've seen dr. write an rx for 0.5% hydrocoritsone in aquaphor becasue they wanted to have the patient get aquaphor but the patient didnt want to pay for it. The insurance would pay since it was a compound. This was a big way that medicaid pateints would get various topically OTC stuff. They fixed that by requiring a compounded med have 2 rx products in it to be covered
