I have five interviews for PM&R but no prelims. Has anyone matched for an advanced position and had to scramble for a prelim spot, medicine or surgery? how hard is to scramble into a surgical prelim vs medicine?

Sure, every year it happens. We see it here on SDN.

Prelim Medicine >> Prelim Surgery. Really, unless you are going into Surgery, almost no one wants to do that intern year.

This person has registered on SDN and is immediately violating the TOS. This same thread is posted in the PM&R forum.

Thanks...they have been warned by another staff member. But I think you have to give new users a break. MOST users do not read the TOS (here or anywhere else) and simply click on "I agree". Doesn't make it right, but its hardly criminal.

Seems to me you might want to start thinking about applying to some more prelim programs. Would be much much better than having to scramble.

Yeah. Start applying to more prelim programs. Since you don't have prelim invites yet, you should definitely apply to preliminary programs affiliated with your interviewing "advanced/PM&R" programs (i.e., those in the same institution). After you apply, I would email the prelim program mentioning that you have an interview at their PM&R program, and you're interested in their program. That would help you obtaining an prelim interview (even if the slots are mostly filled).

That's what I was told too. Do you have to show or prove that you've gotten an interview for the other program too? Or can you just say hey I'm applying to the categorical program at your institution as well?

I would NOT lie! If you have gotten an interview at the categorical program, I would email the prelim program and make it clear that you've gotten an interview at their categorical program. It'll likely push you up the wait list (if they've filled all their interview spots) since it's more likely you'll end up going there.

If you haven't gotten an interview at the categorical program, obviously don't tell them that you have! All a prelim program director has to do is call someone up and screw up your application completely if you lie.

Of course, i was not suggesting that. But for example some programs reply later than others, and it's likely that we won't hear about whether we got an interview or not until later. As a result you can say that you've applied to the categorical program but you won't hear until later.

Apply to more programs. Medicine and surgery.
You don't want to have to scramble. That sucks.

Agreed! Scrambling sucks! You really do not want to do that. What would happen if you got a PGY-2 PM&R spot but were unable to scramble into a PGY-1 prelim program? Then you've lost both chances.

Definitely apply to more programs. Add surgery prelim programs too if you have to.

Yeah. You could do that. Although I don't know how efficacious it would be until you have a hard interview invitation.

At this point, you really should be applying broadly for prelim interviews. A lot places have filled the majority of their interview slots.
