15 credits ( Plus two research hours) while trying to get 10 hours overtime a week. A couple of courses include Organic and Calc. What do you guys think about this? Has anyone worked anywhere around 50 hours? Work would be at Quiznos.

I took 21 credit hours and worked 30 hours a week--so somewhat similar? It was difficult but not impossible. If you're smart you can do it.

Wouldn't be worth it - but it's doable if you're naturally good at school.

Depends on if you have to go to class or not.

It may be difficult with organic and calc as both require lots of work outside their respective classes.

I just took 17 this summer while working a 45hr wk full time and a 10hr part time...I have a wife and two kids

It is doable but not remotely advisable. School comes easy to me but it was still a very tight schedule and I won't be doing it again.

How many hours of sleep do you get?

That sounds incredibly busy. Does your work allow you to do homework on the job? I work front desk for my residence hall ~10 hours a week but I can work on homework probably 7 of those hours.

If you end up attempting this I think it's safe to say that when you aren't at work you'll either be in class or doing homework. There's no way you can go out which may or may not be a problem for you.

Of course it's a problem. However I've made up my mind that I willing to sacrifice going out just about completely. I need to make as much money as possible. I just hope the fatigue of 50 hours does not impair my ability to pull a 4.0.

Is it possible to start at fewer hours per week and ramp up your time commitment when/if your academics are in order? Organic and Calc are both very difficult courses; adding 50 hours per week on top of that will be tough.

Wow, I'm guessing you won't be doing any other ECs, volunteering, or shadowing in the meantime?

Me last semester: 18 credits all science, 30hr work per week on weekends, 10 hrs research= epic bomb. Im talking C's,D's and a F. I have good work ethics and I dont party or blow off classes. Take this how you will but I would not gamble that gpa. Dont listen to sdners saying 'I took 21 credits and made all A's, it was a little hard but its doable". Dont do it, unless you HAVE to. Good day sir.

Agreed. 50 hrs/week of work is considered a lot WITHOUT the school.

I've done over 60 with 17 hours. Not fun but possible. I pulled a 4.0 that semester as well so if I can, you can.

OP,this is what I mean, this is the type of post you should ignore. Trust me on this. (No offense hopefulMD9)

Sounds possible but no fun, sounds like it's you and the books for any free time. I would advise fewer work hours

Its all good. It is NOT advisable but i had to with a little one on the way and having to support myself while still trying to get into med school. All that on top of volunteering and shadowing, I had NO life for months. OP, unless you have to, dont do it. If you have to, it is possible.

Agreed. Don't do it unless it's absolutely necessary.

It sucked but it helped give me a new perspective on what really matters in life. I guess you do what you have to right?
Dont mean to derail the thread but I really hope you get in. When I worked at UTSW I talked to so many snobby students that had a easy life and could care less if they were accepted. Here we are sacrificing and ...... OK, Im preaching (steps off of soapbox). Goodluck guys....

Don't do it unless it is absolutely necessary. I'm talking from experience working 30 hours/week and takings many science courses. It was the single most challenging academic experience of my life. It really teaches you how to prioritize and optimize your studying. However, I did it because I had to work to support myself. I would've definitely benefited mentally and emotionally had I been able to have much more time off. I did do well that semester but I would never advise anyone to gamble with their GPA if they don't have to.

Hahaha hopefully we all do! Cant stand the snobby kids either I know plenty. Medicine is the only thing I have ever seen myself doing though so it seemed mandatory to do everything and anything to get it done. OP, do what you have to, and if you dont have to do this then dont.

I'm still pullin' for you bud.

As for working 40+, volunteering, shadowing, and a full credit load, don't do it.

I took 3 upper-level hard sciences (18 hour semester) + labs, worked 20 clinical and 20 non-clinical hours a week and had to travel. I did fine that semester, but it will sacrifice your sanity.

It depends how intense your classes are and if you can study at work. I work 50 hours a week and I wouldn't advise doing this. I took an intensive summer course (3.5 hours MTW) with my 50hr week workload+4 hrs volunteering a week and it was a lot. I couldn't imagine doing 17 and doing well (by well, I mean A or high B) at work and at school.

That sounds impossible. I think if you end up doing it you will regret it. I'm taking Orgo and lab (4 credits) and working 40 hours a week and can't imagine doing more than that. You don't want your grades to suffer.

It's possible, but it's rough. I did 18 hours (including Physics and Calc) plus 40-50 hours a week, ~4 hours per week volunteering plus helping to raise two teen-aged children and got straight As. I'm lucky that school comes pretty easy to me, but even with that natural gift, I still didn't get a whole lot of sleep. My Physics partner was working two jobs (most mornings in a vet clinic (planning on being a vet), many nights as a waitress and was taking Physics, Organic and A&P and got straight As as well. She was also pretty consistently one of the few people who was up as late as I was.

So, yeah, it can be done. It's not anywhere approaching easy or fun, however and I definitely wouldn't recommend it. I know I will do everything I can to avoid a repeat in the future.
