500 MCAT - please help

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
Most schools will screen out a subsection that low. You probably need to retake IMO. Either way your chances are low, if you have to apply then start wth the newest schools

Depends on the rest of your app. It must be strong! DO letter, shadowing, PS, etc

If you get your app out asap to schools before mid July (knowing the process will take a month itself) and apply broadly you may have a shot with some of the less competitive schools. Big maybe.

If you think you can do better on the MCAT then study and retake but don't do worse. Have you had biochem? A really strong section can make up for a weaker one. The auto screen out for sections is a bit more gray than overall score.

Good luck

That low cars section might worry me a bit.

I have a low cars and low psych section (both 123) but i have strong PS and BS section (both 128).

You can still try apply this cycle. Some admission counselor told me their avg is 500. Your GPA might help balance it out.

Apply early and broadly.

Which school's average is 500 if you don't mind me asking?

A counselor from WVSOM told me that their expected avg this year is 500.
Use caution in that avg applicant mcat does not mean average acceptance mcat. At my univ the avg applicant for this cycle was over 500 so next cycle they will look at avg early applicants and likely increase the cutoff accordingly.

I believe lnguyen was referring to matriculants at WVSOM. Their website says that their old MCAT average was 25 so it makes sense

EDIT: My apologies didn't understand statement at first. Their matriculant average is at 25 for WVSOM, since 2013. The 500 number I believe is also their matriculant average this year (hasn't changed percentile wise much). Since the average hasn't increased, I'm pretty sure op will be competitive in terms of MCAT this cycle also. This depends on whether he/she fits their mission.

If you can bring up your cars, the other sections would almost definitely improve. It's actually kind of impressive that your other sections are as high as they are given that you struggle with reading comprehension.

I would apply to wvsom and any new school that hadn't graduated a class yet. You might get lucky, but schedule a retake like end of August at the latest. Do that whole EK 101 passages thing between now and your retake. I bet your other subsections will improve as you improve your cars.

It's weird it's not more competitive. Wvsom has a lot more going on than most DO schools.

They are a mission oriented school, so they don't look at stats as heavily as other schools. This is why they are mistakenly considered to be a low quality school, when they are actually really good. Looking at the stats of a matriculating class is a poor way to judge school quality.

Absolutely. Which is why CCOM is possibly the most overrated DO school.

CCOM/AZCOM/Coastal Touro's are considered the "best" DO schools for this reason. Pssht. I think the best way to consider which DO school is the best is to see which ones have setup the most GME programs. *cough cough* MSUCOM & NSUCOM.

They get high stats because they're located in more desirable locations, which means a higher probability in residency they'll stay around the area.

Also, being around a major city does have its advantages. There's more resources and more likelihood of seeing more rare cases during rotations.

I know many physicians who would not want to be around WV area for the next 7-8 years... WVSOM's mission is to train physicians in the rural areas of WV and Appalachia.

There's also much more to a DO school than just setting up GME programs. I believe it should be the whole package...GME, research, stats, student support/resources, board scores, match list, price, location etc, like any MD school.

Well this isn't another pointless tier list thread, guys. I apologize because I think my comment started us down this road. I guess the main point is that wvsom is a very good program for someone with low stats.

I suggest applying broadly, especially targeting the newest schools. Skip the coastal Touros, AZCOM, PCOM and CCOM. I can't recommend LUCOM.

125, 122, 126, 127. 3.54 sGPA post bac. I have over 1000 hours in hospital volunteering, have worked as a living assistant and currently work as an EMT.

Ive always struggled with CARS because I'm a slow reader, so I'm not sure about retaking. What do you think my chances are if I applied as is?
