Hi everyone, I was wondering how adcoms would view a 508 vs a 512 differently.

I got a 508 on my first try in September 128/125/125/130 and I was planning to apply next cycle but I want to use this score.

How much of a difference would a score of 512 make? How differently would adcoms view my application?

For background I was a biology major with a 3.85 GPA from a top 25 university in the US.

I am also kind of concerned about my b/b score since I am a biology major and I was wondering how that would be viewed.

Thanks!

Depending on your school list, it can make quite a difference. For DO schools, I would not retake. But for MD schools, if you are convinced you can improve, then perhaps retaking isn't a bad idea. The AAMC says that the average MD matriculant has a 511.7 which doesn't account for in-state residence, URM vs ORM, and a load of other factors. As well, if you look at the MCAT vs GPA Grid published by the AAMC you can see that 52.4% of applicants with 3.79+ 506-509 (your stats) were accepted to MD schools while 66.7% of applicants with 3.79+ 510-513 were accepted. Again, this is purely based on numbers and doesn't consider the rest of your AMCAS application and essays.

I would evaluate your application for weak points and determine whether the MCAT is a major item you want to address.

Admissions teams also understand that a score is a probability, and that's why "confidence bands" are included. In general a difference of 3-4 points at the range you are pointing out (508-512), applicants are generally comparable. We would look for other differentiating elements as it relates to mission fit.

Is 512 as high as you think you can increase your score? If you are going to retake, shoot for 515+.
