I just got my MCAT score and it is lower than what I expected from my practice exams. I am a white female Texas resident.

I am a single gap year applicant at Baylor. I worked as a clinical research assistant for an orthopedic surgeon this past summer, got a ton of clinical experience, one first author publication (case report) and one or two other pubs. I will have a LOR from this physician.

I also work in a biochem lab at school, with 2.5 years of bench work experience (will also have LOR from PI). I helped create a class for undergrads to get involved in clinical research by connecting with mentors from Baylor who now work in the medical field or are medical students. The idea of the class is to get younger undergrads exposed to clinical research and not just basic science.

I have been a clinical volunteer in an ICU (200 hours), I volunteer in a school reading with children (150 hours), and in a shelter cooking dinner (200 hours). I have also been on two medical mission trips (in Costa Rica and Kenya).

I am a D1 student athlete and a member of the leadership team on my team.

My low mcat score is a result of a heavy class load, short break between seasons, and having to care for my dying grandmother. Do I still have a shot at MD schools? Should I apply DO too?

Apply to all your TMDSAS MD and DO schools and you should receive interviews. You could also try these AMCAS schools:
TCU
Tulane
Alice Walton
Belmont
Roseman
Methodist (when it opens)
You are competitive for all DO schools and I suggest these:
TCOM
Sam Houston State
OSU-COM
UIWSOM
KCU-COM
ATSU-KCOM
AZCOM
DMU-COM
MU-COM
CUSOM
PCOM
NYITCOM
Touro-NY

Depends on the school. Those stats will land you somewhere in Texas, if it's Baylor or utsw then rewrite but otherwise I'd give it a shot

You will get in in Texas, Baylor or UTSW may require a higher MCAT. Your clinicals and gpa are fine. If you have time and want and test better rewrite if you wish to go to the 2 listed. If not just apply.
