Wanted to do anesthesiology but didn't do stellar on Step 1 (209). Trying to get my **** during for shelf exams and Step 2 and Level 2. I received a 515 on Comlex. Worst case scenario, could that get me into an IM or anesthesia program somewhere?

I have consulted the Tableau Gods.

They have told me your odds, based on the last 3 years of the match for osteopathic medical students.

They tell me that 7 of the 8 students (88%) that received both a 200-209 USMLE Step 1 score and a 500-549 COMLEX score matched into an anesthesiology residency.

Your chances independent of COMLEX score, with just USMLE Step 1 taken into account: 19 out of 23 (83%) osteopathic students who applied to anesthesiology with a 200-209 matched anesthesiology.

Apply broadly and rotate at reasonable “target programs” or perhaps slight reaches. Have a plan in the back pocket just in case you don’t match, but I think your chances aren’t terrible if you aren’t lucky with location and focus on community gas programs.

I've been wondering -- if a student has both Step 1 and COMLEX scores, does it even make sense to filter using both scores to account for? In other words, I have been told consistently that no one really cares about COMLEX, but does it matter in certain scenarios other than with the former AOA programs for that given specialty?

Edit: I'm kinda asking because I predict my pending Step 1 score will be noticeably improved from my rather subpar 540 on COMLEX, and taking both into account seems to prevent a slanted picture versus just using my Step 1 score when I actually get it.

Great question, I have no clue!

Most places prefer usmle over comlex. I wouldnt worry about it weeding you out.

Yeah I think you're fine due to your Step 1. Most places prefer Step 1 anyways.
