I will graduate college in December and hopefully (if accepted) start medical school next summer so I will have about 6-7 months to work and pay off my loans.

I was considering continuing my research, but the cost of staying at my college will basically leave me with very little net gain in terms of finances. So I've decided to go back home to my suburban area for this 6 month period to make the most money I can. The only issue is that there arent many skill based jobs that want to take on a new person for just 6 months.

Any ideas for things I could do? I'm a little hesitant to retail/waiter/bartender jobs, but open to other jobs. I'm a bus/train ride away from NYC so there's that too.

If you need more clinical hours you could look for a job as a scribe/ MA. Otherwise I think you could do what you want, maybe you could tutor kids to make some money and offer free tutoring to those in need if you need non-clinical volunteering.

Look at local job postings if you just want to see what your options are, and if that turns up nothing consider posting in local FB/reddit groups if anyone knows who’s hiring.

I don't know your current situation, but I'd be careful not to lock yourself into a job that won't have any effect on your application, just in case you aren't successful in getting into medical school this cycle. Once you are accepted, then you can look for jobs.

The best full time job you could get would probably be as a lab tech- these usually pay around $20 an hour, but I'm not too sure if any lab would hire somebody they know will only be there for 6 months. You could also try to supplement your income with working as a private tutor, if you can. This will be part time, but will pay pretty well.

I was planning on working as a lab tech :/ but the pay is not worth it bc housing over here will cost ~$1000/month. And back home there aren't really any labs that will take a guy for 6 months.

DO you think working as a scribe part time and also having a 2nd job doing something random / non medical related will be seen poorly? The scribe would be part-time bc their hours aren't as good and the pay isn't that great.

I don't think it would be seen as bad. Bad = not doing anything or doing very little. The "random" job might even be seen as something interesting.

It will not be seen as bad. The minute you get in, quit anything medical related. Work jobs youve never experienced in social settings, it will carry you farther than scribing ever will
