anyone know of any amazing cases where ppl with a 6 on a section of the mcat got admitted?

I am in similar situation. April 2k4 MCAT 6VR 12PS 11BS. I decided to retake the mcat in august.

I am guessing it would be pretty rare.

what about a 7? i also retook 🙄

I have an aquantance who got into his state school with a 6V. English was not his primary language, though. He also got 11's in the other sections.

Even so, it is probably in your best interest to retake and get that 6 up into an 8 or 9.

Good Luck,
S.

I got an interview with a 5 on verbal

Congrat on the Interview 👍

Which school?

I knew of a girl who got a 6 on her verbal, w/ a total of 26 ...she had a 3.93 from a well-respected public university and got 1 interview and 1 acceptance to a lower end school. I think she may not have had much clinical experience or extracurriculars, so that my have played a role.

i know of one guy who got into his state school with something like 10/10/5
i think english is his 1st language
he had a high gpa

So there is a doctor somewhere who cannot read English language? That is frightening.

And don't get on the ESL high horse. English was not my first language either. There is NO excuse for sucking.

I suggest you to inspect the height of the horse you are riding on. Facility with the language all depends on how long someone has lived here. You can't expect a guy who immigrated here at 17 to have the same level of English reading comprehension as someone who got here at 10.

And the issue is not whether that person can read English, it's the score on MCAT verbal.

7 and up....i have 2 interviews with the old 7 twelver

yeah, i don't understand what his problem was. A persian girl at UCLA (esl who arrived in the country at age 19) got a 14/14/6 and UCLA offered her a full scholie. Do you honestly believe that UCLA thinks she's unqualified to be a physician. I'd rather seek medical advice from her than a person who got an ideal balanced score of 10/10/10.

edit 1: just trying to make a point, not trying to offend anyone.

A low score on an MCAT section where you answer questions on a passage is a reflection of your (in)ability to read and understand English, no? I know several people who have not been able to go to med school because of low verbal scores. Does it suck? Yes! Is it fair? Yes! Communications in medicine can be a matter of life and death. If you are fresh off the boat, take a few years off, learn English, and then apply.

Besides, how do you expect to wade through tons of material in the first two years if you are a slow/bad reader?

I agree with those recommending for low VR scores to retake the MCAT...In addition, I would rather have someone that can communicate efficiently with patients, other physicians/researchers, etc. than be a complete science-know-it-all. So I would rather have a balanced 10/10/10 than a 6/14/14. Just my preference, you don't have to agree with me.

Just curious but how did these people do on the writing sample?

verbal is by far the most important (in terms of practical relevance) section of the MCAT. As such most schools put the most emphasis on it. No matter how well you can cough up memorized science knowledge you need to be able to fully understand complex and oftentimes dull reading. It scares me to think that people that do far below the average on such a critical section of the MCAT go on to become pillars of the american healthcare system. Just my opinion
