I have been waitlisted at all four of my state schools (SUNYs), Tulane, and Georgetown. I am thinking about sending letters of intent during the winter break after I recieve my semester grades. I think my stats are alright 3.66/30. Does anyone know which schools like Letters of intent and which do not? If i do send out letters, how long should it be and what info should it contain? Any advice would be appreciated. Thanks in advance.

I would not reccomend sending a letter of intent to more than one school....the purpose is to say that if you get accepted you will definitely attend, so that should really only apply to one school. You can, however, send letters of interest to other schools, stating your continued interest in the school and that you think youd fit in well there and contribute a lot to the incoming class...blah blah, that kinda stuff.

Are there schools that want you to send letters of intents to get you off their waitlist? That is what i heard georgetown and tulane do.

Thanks, but it would still be nice to atleast have one acceptance in the bag. I am starting to wonder if the school that i go to plays a major role in the decision process. I have seen people from Ivys with my stats and get into a few schools already. I wonder if going to a state school is hurting me a bit in this process.

dude, don't despair... georgetown is money in the bank for you right now. send them a letter of intent asap (even if you might not go there because none of these letters are legally binding in any sort of way), and i can almost guarantee you'll get in. good luck!

I'd send one to Tulane too. If they're not your absolute favorite schools, just express your interest about specific aspects of the school without saying you would definitely go there. If one is your top choice, say something along the lines of "if offered a spot in the class, I would attend." My student interviewer at Tulane said she had been wait-listed originally. She called and set up a phone meeting with the dean of admissions to ask what she could do to improve her standing. When she called on the scheduled day, they transferred her to the dean and he congratulated her on being accepted. I think most schools like to hear that you're really interested in their school - makes it less of a risk for them... Good luck!

How do you know that GU is money in the bank versus other schools? What are you basing this on?

I go to Stony Brook. It is one of New York's State Schools.

Just Applied,

I wouldn't worry too much. I realize that this process is a bit of crapshoot, but being on 4 SUNY waitlists I would say that you will almost DEFINITELY be accepted. All of the SUNY's have major waitlist movement and I know a few have taken like 3/4+ of their waitlist the past couple years. It wouldn't hurt to send a letter to a school- I have also heard that this will help at both Tulane and G-town.

Just a bit of advice though (I know others will probably disagree)... I am currently at a SUNY school and I passed up some pretty good private schools due to $$$$ reasons,... if you can handle staying in NY for medical school, I don't think it is worth it to pay twice as much to go to G-town. Then again, SUNY tuition is rising, so this might not be such a factor as the price gap closes. I am just glad that i saved my self a ton of cash for what I feel is probably just as good of an education. (But it would also be great to get away from Buffalo and live in DC or NO for 4 years!)

Anyways, don't stress, I think you're in good shape.

Thanks for the vote of confidence JMD. I just want to know what i can do to solidify going to a medical school next fall and not worry about taking the MCAT all over again. I know georgetown is unbelievably expensive, but doen't georgetown have a reputation for producing students who get into competitive surgical residencies? I am very interested in surgery and have been told the all the SUNYs are primary care educators. If i feel like i am very interested in surgery, does it matter which school i go to?

5 out of 5 friends who applied last year and got waitlisted sent letters (not even stating that they would definitely attend) a few days later, and they got accepted within a couple of weeks. they also encourage this during the interview if you remember.

What did they include in the letter?

they told me that they basically kissed gtown's ass and made it seem like they would be able to contribute more at gtown than at any other school and gave specific examples.

by the way, i got waitlisted there too a couple weeks ago but i'm not going there so i'm not sending anything. my advice is to definintely write a kiss-up letter even if you're not especially committed to going there because you never know...

I may be wrong but i didn't think waitlists would start moving till the summer
Most of the major movement won't be until May-ish ( or whenever the date is that you can only be holding 1 acceptance, I forget??), but there will be some movement earlier than than that. Once the main interview season starts wrapping up and peops w/ multiple acceptances start dropping them, a few people will get off waitlists. But yes, the WLs really start movin' closer to summer.

what do you want to do? they haven't made any decision yet. my comments were referring only to georgetown and certainly not all or most schools.

Sorry for the digression. But dude, your avatar is so COOL! Is that a polar bear jumping over the water? 👍

You are right, it is a polar bear. I think that he is jumping from a floating block of ice. Nevertheless, it's pretty increadible.

i remember at the gtown interview, the lady in charge said 75% of the waitlisted people who send in letters get in

hi,
so i just wanna get this straight. I should not send in a letter that I am interested in a particular school after visiting for an interview; i really liked the people, the campus the research etc... i went out of my way to meet with a researcher in my field who gave me good info on the school etc... Does anyone write a letter post interview but pre-decision? Id rather them know my feelings before getting tossed onto the wait list...

Send the letter if it's your #1 choice, as it could only help you out.

what if it isnt my number 1 choice? I liked the school alot but its prob #5 on my list; was prob like #10 before i went to check it out. Are those letters only for students that say they will come for sure if accepted?

well there are "lettes of intent" and "letters of interest"....so yeah, send letters to all of your schools that you're waitlisted at if you'd like, but generally you send a "letter of intent" only to your top choice saying that if you got in, you'd definitely go, and send the "letter of interest" to other schools.

so its ok to send a letter of interest after the interview but before a decision is reached? This is not the same as the thank you to the interviewer right?
