Apparently, my parents know someone who got in to Texas A&M med out of high school. I was surprised when they told me it was a 6 year program. Apparently, the program is only in its second year.

What surprises me is becuase when i read the AMSAS I only remember them listing one program that was under 8 years. I tried searching, but didn;t see it. Anyone heard of this?

Yes there are few that are 6 year. UMKC comes to mind.
They are extremely competitive and very state of residency dependent.

They are very state of residency dependent for schools that are not well known such as UMKC, but my advice is to avoid the 6 yr program. UMKC is also not very difficult to get into at all especially if you are from MO. The program at UMKC is not solid, however, and has a reputation of creating not as well prepared physicians as a whole. Though very intelligent students will still be well equiped.

I would suggest applying for the 8 yr ones since they require you to go through undergrad. An undergrad experience is necessary I believe.

Penn State also has a 6 year program with Jefferson Medical School (it is binding and very competitive)

Hi

I am a seven year med student at New Jersey Medical School...

my general opinion is that its great to know you're in med school early and dont have to compete...for some in my class, this helped them as they ironically scored terribly on their mcats and didnt do well in college...for other like me, it is a bit difficult knowing that my scores and grades as well as extracurrciulars gave me promise for a top 5 med school...Overall, my training has been stellar, and intelligent students dont need the extra time in college...its just a choice to be made is all and is purely personal...i did it for numerous reasons...Incidentally i got into a number of programs out of high school including penn/jeff and Uroch and some others...i chose this one as it was close to home...id be more than glad to help ppl out individually and let you know about my experiences...feel free to PM me and ill provide you contact info if you are interested
