Hey guys,

I have approximately 7 weeks before my step date. I have taken 2 NBME's (6 and 12) and 50% of the questions that i missed are from path even though i feel like i know first aid path well. Apparently not.

I am using pathoma. Should i also use Rapid review path or should i mainly use pathoma with goljan audio/transcript. I can save time (by not reading rapid review) and can use that time towards keep reviewing my First aid and doing questions? Thoughts?

In all seriousness, Pathoma is more clear and concise. Also well organized. I haven't seen much extra in RR.

If you're really in the mood for some Goljan, grab the audios and listen to them in the gym or driving.

Sounds good. Any other thoughts?

X2 .... path was my strongest subject walking into the exam because of pathoma . 👍

Watch 1-2 systems of pathoma, do UWorld qbank until you feel like your going to throw up, and then get up and do it the next day. Your score is ~ to # of passes through the mat'l + # of practice questions.

Pathoma can be done in a few days no problem. Try to make it through 2-3 times. The rest of the time just keep pounding out questions. You learn a lot in the process of doing Uworld.

Hey guys,

Little background...I took NBME 12 few weeks ago and i missed alot more than questions i wanted (missed 70 questions). Out of these 70 questions, 35 were from pathology and 21 were from pharmacology. So that showed that pathology and pharmacology were my weakness.

As others have suggested above to do pathoma. So i have been doing pathoma for last few weeks in the following manner. So my current schedule looks like this:

I read a system from Pathoma (1st exposure to path) then I read entire system which includes embryo, anatomy, path, physio and pharm from First Aid Binder (I broke down my fa in a binder and i have notes which were taken from High Yield Series, Med Essentials, BRS series). This is my 2nd exposure to path for the day and 1st exposure to pharm. After that I do a block of questions from USMLERx question bank focusing on path, path phys and pharm only. This is my 3rd exposure to path and 2nd to pharm for the day. Then before going to bed, I review pharm related to the system covered that day. This leads to 3rd exposure to pharm for the day.

Another weakness was not being able to recall information in a timely manner because prior to last nbme, I had been doing questions from uworld in an untimed tutor mode. So to combat that I am doing questions from usmlerx qbank in a TIMED mode/system based. I am also trying to push myself to finish the block with few minutes to spare. This is important because it will allow me to finish the entire block and not miss easier questions due to lack of time and also will force me to give up quicker on a difficult question to have time to come back to it at the end. It will ensure that I am not spending more time than needed on one question.

So I am studying one system a day. I just finished this schedule and about to start it for the 2nd time. It took me a little more than 2 weeks to finish everything. In next two week, I am planning to go through the entire schedule for the 2nd time. I should be done around April 10th. Then I will take a nbme exam to see what areas/ subjects I am still missing.

Reason I am using usmlerx over uworld is because usmlerx tests facts from first aid so in a way it helps to drill in the concepts. Also my exam date is not until May but i have step up hard deadlines on which i need to show progress. I am planning to take another NBME exam on April 19th. I would like to be around 220s on April 19th and then i can spend last few weeks completing U World questions for the 2nd time and perhaps even going through my "schedule" once or twice more.

Overall plan seems good to me because It allows me to address my weak areas daily and allows repetition. However, i am still very anxious because I am not sure if it will work and it is this anxiety which is causing me to write this Novel. Most of the time I am confident that it will work because I remind myself that I am hitting my weakness daily but I am still unsure/scared of "what if" and un easy about the whole thing. Anxiety dies down after doing questions and scoring around high 60s to low 70s in the qbank.

Approach towards questions:

Read the question, come up with a diagnosis and then answer the questions. If i can't come up with a diagnosis then i work backwards ( i try to look at the answer choices and ask myself what is the typical presentation of this answer choice and whether that presentation matches the signs and symptoms presented in the questions. If they do not match then i eliminate them)

What do you guys think? Am i missing something in my schedule? Do i need to change something up to make sure i am on right track? or am i just worrying too much?

Any thoughts, concerns or suggestions will be appreciated. Thank you for your time.

Is goljan audio really necessary if you use pathoma + RR path book only as your 2 prime resources for path?

I ask because of how dated the audio lectures are.

I honestly think the audio is best used as an adjunct and only when you have downtime. It served me well using it during walking around, driving etc. Listen in 10-15 mins chunks if you have time. I've never actually sat down and dedicated time to listening to it especially if you're already doing RR. I gave up on RR because of time and because that format wasn't conductive for me.

Not using RR or Goljan audio. Using fa binder( fa, notes from brs, high yield and med essentials), usmlerx and pathoma.

Do I need to make changes to schedule or I am anxious for no good reason? Gracias!!

Hey, I have used the audios in past and they are good but not using them in current schedule. Overall thoughts?

Well, i really want some feedback so i will simplify the post above.

Few weeks ago took NBME 12 and missed alot of questions. Half of the missed questions were from Pathology. And 1/2 from the other 50% of missed questions were from pharm. So i have been doing pathoma, just like other people have suggested.

So i read a system in pathoma then read the same system from FA (has notes from BRS, High yield series and med essentials) then do USMLERx question (~40q) from the same system focusing on path, pathphys and pharm. Then before going to sleep, i quickly look over pharm which was covered that day. I do 1 system a day.

I finished aforementioned schedule and now starting the same schedule over. Next NBME test date is april 12th. I should be able to finish everything by then. I MUST SEE improvements. Hopefully will be around 215ish range on next NBME.

Prior to NBME 12, i was doing Uworld questions in a untimed tumor mode and because of that i think, i had trouble recalling information in a timely manner on practice exam so now i am doing questions in a timed mode and forcing myself to finish the block with 3-4 minutes to spare.

So questions is: Am i doing enough and approaching it the right way to see improvements or do i need to make changes? Thanks. Hopefully shortened version of the post will get me some reassurance etc because i am dying due to anxiety.

I am scoring high 60s to low 70s on USMLErx. Thanks folks!

I might be misunderstanding you, but are you just using the Pathoma book? If so, I can't imagine that it'd be a brilliant improvement over FA alone. Pathoma is meant to be watched as lectures with the book only as a supplement.

I have already watched the videos and took notes as needed. Now just reading it and it makes sense why things are the way they are written in pathoma.

Just reading the book without ever watching the lectures wouldn't be much help because the videos in a way explain the book.

You've identified your weakness and are going after it aggressively. It certainly seems that is the correct approach, though we won't know for sure until after you take your next NBME on April 12. I think another thing that will help is that you've started doing your UW blocks in a timed setting.

There's not a whole lot I would change at this point. You've got the right strategy, now it's all about execution. If you can follow through, you will see 215 and higher.

Slightly off topic but do the NBME's have a built in break time like the real exam? I'm taking my first one in about a week so I was just wondering. Thanks in advance 🙂

no. you just have to pause the exam after you're done with a section because it will immediately jump to the next one. just keep track of your break time on your own if you want to simulate the exam experience.

But will the timer keep running on the next section (i.e. if I pause b/w section 1 and 2 will the timer of section 2 start)? If I remember reading correctly, you can buy an untimed version or a timed version. Which version does everybody use? Thanks again 🙂

Anyone else with suggestion/advice/tweaks?

I have already started my 2nd pass.
