As a medic, I work 12s and I like that. I was curious what people preferred working ED shifts.

I ranked nothing but 8's, 9's, and 10's in my top 8. I liked some of the programs near the bottom of my list but my wife and I both chose not to do the 12 hour shifts. They suck!! I was a medic and loved them when I was working the streets, but that was when I was younger and didn't need 8 hours of sleep to be functional. And 12's are not conducive to real life....the other shifts are way more humane. Screw 12's!!

9's.. which if the OP didnt know if basically like an 8 which sort of guarantees you leave at 9 hours.

Thanks for the info. Ten 12s a month is very tempting . . . but I'm a decrepit old man as it is. By the time I hit residency, my bones will be half dust. Sounds like 8s are the way to go. 🙁

12s if you don't have a family (lots of days off to sleep in etc).

8s or 9s if you do have a family.

12s are great as a medic, because you do have SOME downtime. In teh ED you don't. 12s are kind of rough, and it really wipes out your whole day. We do 10s and 12s (no 12s as seniors).
