Answer: earliest stage of lateral movement

I thought lateral movement starts with a vertical rotation and then lateral translation. Does anyone have any thought on this?

yes you are right ,but the ans options do not have rotation ,so the ans printed is correct, early lateral movement stage. in one of your thread or post by you i have asked doubt on occlussal contact of premolar.. have you done research on it its imp i think.... pls try to find out the correct ans for that..

See....they are asking about Bennett movement specifically which ,acc.to its defination is a lateral movement on the working side.So...that explains.Answer key is right.
Hope I am clear .

Are you two implying that Bennett movement specificly refers to the lateral part? If I remember correctly, the decks state that Bennett movement is the same as side shift or laterotrusion which is the lateral movement of the working side which includes a vertical rotation and lateral translation. Please let me know if this is not correct. Thanks.

WIRELESS_DOC

The basic condylar movements that occur during lateral excursions:
The working side condyle rotates and shifts laterally, and possibly upwards, downwards, forwards or backwards, with the exact movement depending upon the shape of the mandibular fossa.

Bennett movement/side shift/laterotrusion

It refers specifically to the condylar movement that takes place on the working side during lateral excursions.
As the name suggests, this movement is lateral to the initial CR position, but it can also have a forward, backward, upward or downward component, in which case the movement is called lateroprotrusion or lateroretrusion if the direction of travel is to the front or to the back respectively, or laterosurtrusion or laterodetrusion if movement is up or down.

So,hope I am clear that Bennett movement occurs during the earliest stage of lateral movement (AS PERTHE QUE)& the rotation and lateral shift occur together. You can refer to Wheeler'sD.A chapter on TMJ for better understanding.
Hope that helps.
