there is no Early Action with dental schools so you're not bound to anyone. From what I understand, as long as you pay this year's deposit, and part or all of next year's deposit you're fine.

If you were to reapply to dental school for next year, the AADSAS portal asks "Have you ever applied to dental school prior to the present application cycle?". Following that you would have to enter in NYU and write if you were accepted/enrolled/denied/waitlisted. So you may be risking it, but i'm not sure. The best thing to do would be to be up front with NYU. You honestly think they'd be mad at you for not being able to afford the equivalent of a home without a steady source of income?

But to be straight up with you....almost no one can afford NYU. Unless someone comes from a very wealthy family, I highly doubt one could shell out ~101-105k a year for 4 years. You will probably be eligible to take out loans. Fill out a FAFSA form.

Best of luck with whatever you choose.

I think it would look bad to defer enrollment. You applied bc you want to be a dentist and NYU is giving you that opportunity. There are tons of student loans you can apply for... The money is out there.

why cant u just take out loans like everyone else? no one is able to afford the higher education, even in state is expensive. just suck it up and borrow 400k! You are given the opportunity to become a dentist and there are thousands of people that would love to be in your position right now, don't take it for granted. Are you seriously telling us that you want to re-apply again and go to a cheaper school? You are risking yourself another year's worth of application fees and the uncertainty. What happens if no one accepts u next cycle? How are you going to explain at your interview why u chosen to defer or decline NYU? That is frowned upon. Just because its too expensive? Im sure all students at EVERY single dental school is taking out loans.. you dont want to be left out.

why did u apply to NYU if you knew that NYU would be out of your reach?

again, please give it some more thought and GOOD LUCK!

^^ yeah, why no student loans?

Everybody is doing it. C'mon, you'll be cool.

Honestly, though, maybe the amounts are getting so absurd its reached the tipping point where some people just have too much common sense to get underneath this much debt?

seriously, pay your deposit and be done with it! You are smart enough to make it this far and got in, continue being the smart guy.

You want the bride/groom to wait at the altar while you go searching for a replacement?

I don't think this is ever a smart idea. Nor do I think exorbitant tuition is a good idea, but still, get educated and into your career ASAP!

are you trying to avoid taking a loan? im a bit confused as to what the problem is here

R u international student? No loan allowed?

The rule of thumb is to only apply to schools you know you would attend, financially or otherwise. I'm sure that NYU would not be happy that they are holding a spot you do not want, regardless of whether you are able to get loans or not.

see the post by the OP directly above yours.

Its not that the OP doesn't want to attend. Don't add an extra layer of confusion.

OP, look into Wells Fargo's student loans (they have loans for graduates in health professional programs, too. ie. dental students). I'm pretty sure you can get a loan from them as long as you're backed up by someone who has a US citizenship. They have decent rates, too.

You might have tried contacting banks, already, not sure though. But no harm in contacting them, now! Good luck 🙂 I hope all of this gets cleared up soon

Yeah, there are a lot of private loans our there, but getting backed up by a US cosigner isn't as easy as it sounds - of course unless the borrower has a family member who is a US citizen. Who in their right mind would cosign for a $400k loan? Plus, for internationals, the interest rates may not be so "decent" as you think. For all those who are eligible for federal aids/loans, you guys should know how lucky and privileged you are to be US citizens.

@rryn, pls check your PM.

Why did you apply there if you knew that you would not want to go there if accepted due to the tuition fee?

I would go to NYU and consider some loan repayment option (HPSP, NHSC, IBR)

These options are only available for US citizens

I'm on my smartphone so I didn't read the previous posts. In that case, the OP is screwed with outrageous out-of-state or private tuition...this is murky waters for me.

I believe that 90% of the students depends on student loans!! the problem is solved this way and you will work hard to pay it back when you graduate
