Hello!
I'm recently admitted Veterinary student for fall 2023.

Right now I have over 9k in cc debt due to undergrad tuition, application fees, emergency spendings and so on. Not to mention I have to pay another $1000 for two more Prerequisites by April.
I'm working full time right now to them pay off and it seems like I can cut it down to 5k by July.

My question is, can I use student loan to pay them?
Can I request an 'extra' amount of federal loan or is it set by the school?

Any advice would be appreciated!!

Not to be nosy, but is there a reason you haven't used student loans to pay for your previous tuition and school related expenses? Just most student loans have a much lower interest rate than CCs do. You are allotted a specific amount of student loan money that you can accept through your school and that's usually the max you can have and it's all calculated based on coa of your school and your fasfa filing. Plan on using student loans to pay for your prereqs and school related expenses if you can. Hope that helps!

You can only get as much federal loan money as the school lists as the cost of attendance. You’re technically supposed to only use the loans for educational expenses, but they don’t actually police what you spend the money on. So you can’t just request 10k extra loans to pay off this credit card debt, but if you took out the max cost of attendance and happened to find a super cheap housing or not have vehicle expenses or have some other way to cut expenses and save 10k, you'll probably be ok using that cash to pay off your credit card debt because they don’t usually, like, check an itemized list of what you spent your money on. If you need money more than the cost of attendance, that’s when people have to go to private student loans. Private student loans are a whole different deal than federal ones though. I didn’t use private loans so I don’t know how strict they are and if they’d let you use that money on cc debt.
